Robert T. Nickelsburg 1936-2024
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Dr. Robert Theodore “Bob” Nickelsburg, 88, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024, in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
He was born Jan. 16, 1936, to George and Elsie Schwab Nickelsburg, in New Rochelle, New York. He attended and graduated from the University of Northern Colorado, obtaining his doctorate in education. Robert was a professor in special education for 26 years, mostly at Youngstown State University. He pursued his career in special education, partly due to his daughter Anthea, who is developmentally impaired.
On Aug. 9, 1958, Robert lovingly married Judith Nehrig and they spent 62 beautiful years together before she went to be with the Lord on Dec. 5, 2020.
He was a member of Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church in Rockford, Michigan, where he was active in the prayer ministry and volunteered helping with church maintenance. As his brother George mentions, Robert was known for his vibrant faith in Jesus Christ, which gave him a praiseworthy character that showed love, compassion, strength, wisdom, empathy and determination when needed the most for others around him — but he always balanced this serious side with his unforgettable witty humor.
Robert is survived by his son, Theodore “Ted” (Helen) Nickelsburg; daughter, Anthea Nickelsburg; grandson, John Nickelsburg; granddaughter, Lisa Nickelsburg; brother, George Nickelsburg; and sister, Priscilla (Michael) Martin.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Katherine Dojan.
Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, 2024, at Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church, 4610 Belding Road, Rockford, Michigan.
Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church, with Pastor Steve Hahm officiating.
Entombment will take place in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Grand Rapids, Michigan.
