Sherwood B. Stephens 1943-2024
BOARDMAN — Sherwood Brice Stephens, 81, passed away after a long illness, Thursday, Nov. 14, 2024, at Hospice of the Valley Hospice House, with his loving family by his side.
Sherwood was born Jan. 3, 1943, in Greenville, Pa., a son of the late Floyd B. Stephens and Helen McCoy Stephens.
He graduated as the first valedictorian at Commodore Perry High School in Pennsylvania in 1961, and graduated from Youngstown College with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting in 1965. After earning his bachelor’s degree, Sherwood attended Kent State University.
Sherwood was a certified public accountant. After graduating from college, Sherwood started working as an accountant for Hill, Barth & King, and later as the controller for Compco Metal Products, before becoming the CFO at National Rolls U.S. operations in Avonmore, Pa. He would occasionally teach an accounting class at YSU and sat on the state board at one point to write questions for the CPA exam.
Sherwood was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother. He volunteered to help with various activities that his children were involved in as they grew up and supported his grandchildren in their activities.
Sherwood was a member of Youngstown State University Alumni; a member of the Republican Committee of Allegheny, Pa.; a member of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, on behalf of the steel industry; was chairman for the Fresh Air Camp in Youngstown for several years; volunteered and was a mentor for many young adults for Junior Achievement; a member of the American Institute of CPAs; and a member of the Mahoning Valley Accounting Society, where he served as president and in several other officer positions. He served on the Kidney Foundation, was a member of the Pittsburgh Ballet and Symphony Society, and was a longtime season ticket holder of the Pittsburgh Pirates and YSU football. Sherwood was certified as a scuba diver and a cave diver. He enjoyed snow skiing, was a wine connoisseur, enjoyed world traveling, and was an avid fan and supporter of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Pirates and Pittsburgh Penguins.
Sherwood is survived by two children, Tracy L. (Robert A. Jr.) Mackovick of Boardman and Scott B. (Jennifer) Stephens of Alexandria, Virginia; grandchildren, Robert A. (Bianca Jones, fiancee) Mackovick III of Poland, Brandon B. Mackovick of Boardman, Hayden B. Stephens of Lakeland, Florida, Sarah B. Stephens, Alistair B. Stephens and Maximilian B. Stephens, all from Alexandria, Virginia; his sister, Vicki (Donald) Shew of Harmony, North Carolina; brothers-in-law, Fred (Jan) Untch of Hawaii and David (Joanne) Untch of Poland; his stepmother, Cora Stephens of Leesburg, Florida; and his aunt, Vera Jones of Canton, Georgia.
Besides his parents, Sherwood was preceded in death by his wife of 32 years, the former Katherine Untch, whom he married Aug. 7, 1965, and who died Nov. 16, 1997; his wife, Ruth Metcalf; two grandsons, Gabrielle B. Stephens and Sam B. Stephens; and several aunts and uncles.
Family and friends may call 9 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024, at Davis-Becker Funeral Home, 8536 Market St. in Boardman.
There will be a funeral service to follow at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Reverend Russ Adams officiating.
Interment will take place in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Boardman.
