Rev. Robert J. Hannon Jr. 1940-2024

MCDONALD — The Rev. Robert J. Hannon Jr., 84, entered into eternal rest, Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2024, at Shepherd of the Valley in Howland.

Robert was born Oct. 6, 1940, in Cleveland, a son of the late Robert J. Hannon Sr. and Agnes Donohue Hannon, and was a lifelong Ohio resident.

Robert graduated from Ursuline High School and later earned his degree from Youngstown State University. Following his academic pursuits, he embraced his calling to serve God and attended St. Mary Seminary. He was ordained into the priesthood on June 23, 1979, at St. Columba Cathedral, celebrating his first Mass at his cherished home church, Our Lady of Perpetual Help in McDonald.

Before entering the priesthood, Robert served proudly in the United States Air Force, earning the Good Conduct Medal for his exemplary service to his country.

During his decades-long ministry, Father Bob provided spiritual guidance and pastoral care at numerous parishes, including St. Mary Church in Warren, St. Michael Church in Canton, St. Stephen Church in Niles and St. Edward Church in Youngstown respectively. He later served as pastor at St. Stephen Church in Niles, SS. Philip and James Church in Canton, St. Bernadette Church in Masury and St. Patrick Church in Kent, retiring in 2006 after a lifetime devoted to his faith and community. Father Bob also served as chaplain at the former Forum Health Northside Medical Center and was a dedicated member of the priests’ council.

Robert’s love and care extended beyond the walls of the church. He was a cherished brother, uncle and friend, remembered for his compassion, humility and unwavering commitment to those in need.

Father Bob is survived by his five siblings, Joanne Radabaugh of McDonald, Kathleen Hannon of McDonald, Jane Tock of Cleveland, Jean McBride of Boardman and Thomas (Dorothy) Hannon of McDonald; along with many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Evelyn Hannon.

Private services honoring Father Bob’s life were held Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2024, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in McDonald. He was laid to rest beside his mother in Kerr Cemetery in Mineral Ridge.
