Richard “Richie” F. Shiley, 1948-2024
NEWTON FALLS — Richard “Richie” F. Shiley, 76, passed away at his residence and surrounded by family, Sunday, Dec. 15, 2024, after a brief battle with cirrhosis of the liver.
He was born Sept. 19, 1948, in Youngstown, the son of Frederick Richard Shiley and Mary Katherine Pezdir Shiley. Richie lived in Newton Falls since 1976 and was formerly of Niles, where he graduated from Niles McKinley High School in the Class of 1966.
After high school, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1969. He then married the love of his life, Diane Lynn Ross, on April 17, 1971, and they have enjoyed the past 53 years of marriage together.
Richie worked in construction for 36 years, retiring from Great Lakes Construction as a construction superintendent in 2007. He was an active member of Newton Falls Amvets Post #112 for many years. Richie also served on the Newton Township Zoning Board of Appeals. He loved fishing, hunting, traveling and visiting botanical gardens in each city, throwing horseshoes, shooting darts, ice fishing, March Madness, playing softball and watching sports — especially The Ohio State Buckeyes, Cleveland Browns and Duke Blue Devils basketball.
He is survived by his wife, Diane L. Shiley of Newton Falls; daughters, Crystal (Matt) Bulford of Newton Falls and Denise Shiley (Kenny Clegg) of Mineral Ridge; grandsons, Thayne Shiley (Kayla Helgeson) of Rochester, Minnesota, and Sammy Kriebel IV (Desiree Brown) of Bristolville; godson, Frankie (Nikki) Dillon of Cranberry, Pa.; sisters, Mary Lou Fletcher of Niles, Rosemarie (Gary) Hulett of Lordstown, Sandy Barton of Pine Knot, Kentucky, and Nancy (Leroy) Culver of Howland; brother, John Shiley of Fort Myers, Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
Richie was preceded in death by his parents and by one brother, William Shiley.
Funeral services will be at noon Saturday, Dec. 28, 2024, at the James Funeral Home in Newton Falls, with Pastor Jennifer Dorn officiating, with calling hours from 10 a.m. to noon.
Cremation will follow the funeral service. He will be laid to rest in St. Stephen Cemetery in Niles.
