Timothy Emerson Smith 1955-2024

BOARDMAN — It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Timothy Emerson Smith, who left us Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2024, at the age of 69. He was a man of immense energy and vast interests, with passions ranging from jewelry design to dog sled racing.

He worked for many years at the family-run jewelry store, Daniel E. Smith Jeweler in Salem, before eventually opening his own store, Smith & Company Jewelers in Boardman.

Tim studied jewelry repair at Gem City College in Quincy, Illinois. He became a certified gemologist, receiving his certificate from the American Gemological Institute of America in Los Angeles, California.

Tim’s interests ranged far and wide, and one activity at a time was never enough. Beginning an adventure inevitably meant taking it to its ultimate conclusion, only to start another.

He was president of his Salem High School Class of 1973. He volunteered for backstage crews during the early days of the Salem Community Theater, eventually becoming president, and appeared as Tevia in two memorable productions of “Fiddler on the Roof.” Joining the Salem Jaycees led to becoming president of the organization. He became a board member of the Ohio Council of Retail Merchants and president of the Ohio Jewelers’ Association. He also served on the board of the Youngstown Symphony and was a member of Youngstown Rotary.

He played bass guitar in rock bands, competed off-road with his hot-rodded Jeep, The Jade Grenade, kenneled and raced a dog-sled team, achieved an instrument rating as a pilot, sold computers, golfed, dabbled in gourmet cooking and played bass guitar in several bands, eventually building a recording studio.

Those who knew him will remember his lighthearted, spirited and endlessly positive nature.

He was predeceased by his father, Daniel Emerson Smith; and Linda Antram Smith, mother of their two children, Townsend Bendersmith and Hadleigh Savage.

He is survived by his mother, Jeanine Rians Smith; brothers, Gregory Rians Smith (wife Betty), and Daniel Thaddeus Smith (wife Lisa); and Julie Michael Smith, mother of their son, Tobias Michael Smith.

Family and friends may pay their respects 4 to 5:50 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, 2024, at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4221 Market St., Boardman, where a memorial service will take place at 6 p.m., with the Very Rev. Msgr. John Zuraw J.C.L., V.G. as celebrant.
