Alfred R. DeVengencie 1936-2025

WARREN — Alfred R. DeVengencie, 88, passed away Friday, Jan. 10, 2025, with his family by his side.

He was born Nov. 22, 1936, in Warren, the son of Fred and Sue Cardarelli DeVengencie, and was a lifelong area resident.

Alfred graduated from Warren Harding High School, Class of 1954. He became a member of the U.S. Navy Reserve in 1955 and did basic training at Great Lakes Naval Base. Alfred was proud to serve aboard the battleship USS Horace A. Bass for training. He was honorably discharged in 1959.

Alfred started working for the City of Warren in the water department in 1955 and retired in August 2004 as a foreman. While employed for the City of Warren, he was granted an 18-year leave of absence to become a business agent for AFSCME Council 8, where he was instrumental in organizing locals all over the state of Ohio.

Alfred had many passions throughout his life. He enjoyed all sports and played softball until he was 50. He was an avid golfer, belonging to many golf leagues in Ohio and Florida. Alfred spent many enjoyable winters in New Port Richey, Florida, and was a past co-owner of numerous racehorses he raced at Mountaineer Park. He enjoyed traveling to Europe, as well as frequent trips to the Bahamas and Las Vegas. Of all the casinos he frequented, the Hard Rock in Tampa, Florida, was his favorite.

He leaves his wife of many years, the former Mary Jean Choppa of Warren; two sons, Alfred DeVengencie and Donald (Shannon) DeVengencie, both of Warren; two daughters, Diane Shamrock of Niles and Denise Delaquila of Warren; a stepdaughter, Atty. Lisa (Charles) Wallace of Liberty Township; a brother, James (Carol) DeVengencie of Palmetto, Florida; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; along with nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Besides his parents, Alfred was preceded in death by a brother, Anthony DeVengencie; and his stepson, Kirk Rowles.

Per Alfred’s wishes, there were private services held Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2025, at the Peter Rossi & Son Memorial Chapel, Warren.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Alfred’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
