Emma W. Jones 1930-2025
STRUTHERS — Emma Wanda Jones, 94, passed away peacefully at home, Sunday, Jan. 5, 2025.
Emma was born Dec. 28, 1930, to Howard and Wanda Hallewell.
Emma married Thomas E. Jones on Dec. 17, 1960, and was a loving wife of 53 years until Tom’s passing in 2014.
Emma was also preceded in death by their son, Thomas S. Jones (partner, Rob Pasco); her sisters, Goldie Boyles, Alberta Powell and Linda Stone; along with her brothers, William (Mary) Hallewell, Albert Hallewell and Howard (Jeffie) Hallewell; Tom’s sisters, Blanche (Regis) Barnhizer, Florence (Ralph) Durbin and Mildred (Robert) Bradley; and his brothers, James (Jane) Jones and Raymond Jones.
Emma was a lifelong member of St. John Episcopal Church, being baptized, confirmed and married there. Emma’s lifelong commitment of service to Christ included being a member of the Vestry, receiving the Vestry Silver Cross Award. She was vital in reestablishing the St. Faith Altar Guild at St. John’s. She was part of the Stephen Ministry, EFM, Women’s coffee / food giveaway, the Red Door Cafe, Adult Forum and the Boar’s Head luncheon. She was a Sunday school teacher and a soup kitchen volunteer. She took great pride in being part of the Boar’s Head Festival.
Emma was a Girl’s Friendly Society leader and a Blue Bird leader. She was on the board of the Fish Samaritan House and received the Golden Nail Award from Habitat for Humanity.
Emma graduated from East High School and from Youngstown State University with a bachelor’s degree in social work. She was an LPN at Northside Medical Center in Youngstown for several years. After earning her bachelor’s degree, Emma worked for Protestant Family Services and later for Help Hotline before retiring.
Emma is survived by her two daughters, Jennifer Jones of Struthers and Carole Jones Myers, and son-in-law, Mark of Vandalia; grandchildren, Mick J. Myers and Carly N. Myers, both of Vandalia; many nieces and nephews; and Louise Thurik, whom Emma considered her adopted daughter.
There will be a memorial service celebrating Emma’s life 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, 2025, at St. John Episcopal Church, 323 Wick Ave., Youngstown, with the Rev. Abraham Allende officiating.
The family requests material tributes take the form of contributions to Hospice of the Valley, 979 Tibbetts Wick Road, Girard, OH, 44420, in memory of Emma.
Her daughters want to thank the nurses with Hospice of the Valley for all they did in making Emma’s last days comfortable.
