Helen Bornemiss 1937-2025
GIRARD — Helen “Bunnie” Bornemiss, 87, passed away peacefully, Sunday, Jan. 19, 2025, at home.
Bunnie was born Nov. 6, 1937, in Girard, a daughter to Paul and Marian O’Neil Kope.
Bunnie’s career spanned over three decades, serving in various roles that showcased her exceptional skills and dedication. She began her professional journey as a teller at Mahoning Bank, later working as a secretary for Ohio Leather Works. Ultimately, she fulfilled her most significant role as the city office manager and secretary to four mayors in Girard, a position she held for 30 years.
In addition to her professional life, Bunnie’s educational background was impressive. She graduated from Girard High School in 1955, earned an associate degree in business from Youngstown College in 1957, and also graduated from the LWH School of Cosmetology in the same year.
Outside of her work and education, Bunnie was known for her lively spirit and passion for various activities. She enjoyed bocce, golf, bowling, volleyball and bingo. She had a particular fondness for visiting casinos.
Bunnie was a lifelong parishioner at St. Rose Church and was a member of the Catholic Women’s Club.
Bunnie is survived by her beloved husband, Martin “Buddy” Bornemiss, whom she married Nov. 9, 1961, and lived happily for 63 years; and their children, Kenneth (Chris) Bornemiss, Joseph (Renee) Bornemiss and Barbara (Basem) Doss. She was a proud grandmother to Michael Bornemiss, Patrick (Allie) Bornemiss, Stephen Bornemiss, Cara Bornemiss, Jenna Bornemiss, Ben Doss, Sara Doss and Nick Doss; as well as a great-grandmother to Matthew Bornemiss. She is also survived by her sister Regina Demas; and many nieces and nephews.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Ronald Bornemiss; and her sisters, Mary, Peggy and Dorothy.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, 2025, at Blackstone Funeral Home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 24, 2025, at St. Rose Church.
Bunnie will be laid to rest in Girard City Cemetery.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to either St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center.
