Ion Badescu 1950-2025

YOUNGSTOWN – Ion “John” Badescu died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2025.

Ion was born Sept. 4, 1950, in Prigor, Romania. Sadly, Ion lost both of his parents by the time he was 8. He was then raised by his Grandmother Anuta. Ion experienced many hardships as a child, but learned strength, resourcefulness and perseverance.

Ion saw great success in his professional life in Romania, serving as professor at a trade college as well as mayor of his village. He was well respected in his community for his kindness, generosity and wisdom.

Once in the United States, he utilized his artisan skills to create extraordinary furniture. In his spare time, Ion was an avid reader with a love of history. He could often be found in his woodworking shop creating furniture, toys for his grandchildren or anything his wife might need around the house.

Ion met the love of his life, Maria Bota Badescu, in 1977, marrying her the next year. During their 46-year marriage, they welcomed two daughters, Diana and Maria.

In search of a better life for their girls, Ion and Maria made the hard decision to leave Romania and move to America. They arrived March 11, 2000.

Life in America was challenging at first, but Ion worked hard and sacrificed for his family. He purchased a home, put both of his daughters through college and got to see them start families of their own.

Ion’s faith was an important aspect of his life. He was a member of Holy Trinity Romanian Orthodox Church in Youngstown.

Left behind to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Maria of Youngstown; daughters, Diana (Mike) Davis of Canfield and Maria (Anthony) Boulos of Canfield; brother-in-law, Todor Bota of Youngstown; and sister, Maria Badescu of Prigor, Romania.

His grandchildren, James and Sofia, held a special place in his heart.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Pavel and Solomia Badescu; and Grandmother Anuta.

Calling hours will be 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2025, at Vaschak-Kirila Funeral Home in Cornersburg, with funeral services 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, 2025, at Holy Trinity Romanian Orthodox Church.
