Mary Cascarelli Maytas 1938-2025

YOUNGSTOWN — Mary Cascarelli Maytas, 86, passed away Friday, Jan. 24, 2025, surrounded by her family.

Mary was born July 2, 1938, at her family home in Youngstown, to Carmen Cascarelli and Josephine Frank.

A proud 1957 graduate of East High School, Mary enjoyed a varied career, working at Strouss Department Store in Downtown Youngstown, Ferguson Farm Market, Shaker Woods Festivals, Rulli Brothers Market and Der Dutch House.

On April 11, 1959, Mary married Theodore Maytas, and together they built a life centered on love and raising their three children until his passing Dec. 30, 1986.

Mary was a strong and determined woman who dedicated her life to her family. She cherished tradition, valued loyalty and togetherness, and created a warm, welcoming home where no one ever left hungry. Her love for cooking and baking touched countless lives, and her pasta e fagioli, apple pies and kolache were family favorites. Mary also loved dancing, especially to polkas and the tarantella, and was known for her energy and joy on the dance floor.

Mary is survived by her children, Deborah Maytas Blair, Diane Maytas and Theodore Maytas; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren (with number eight on the way); her sisters, Teresa Hankey and Carmel Shura; and her sisters-in-law, Carol Cascarelli and Patricia McDaniel.

She was preceded in death by six brothers and one sister.

Mary will be remembered for her unwavering devotion to her loved ones. Though her absence is deeply felt, her legacy lives on in the traditions she cherished and the family she placed at the center of her life.

Visitation will be held from 9 to 9:45 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2025, at the Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, 343 Via Mt Carmel Ave., Youngstown, Ohio 44505, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m.
