Richard Bodendorfer 1927-2025
STRUTHERS — Richard Bodendorfer, fondly known as Bodie or Rich, 97, of Struthers, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2025, at Hospice of the Valley in Poland.
Rich was born on Nov. 2, 1927, to John and Sofia Fabian Bodendorfer, in New Castle, Pa. He was “the baby” of the family being the last born and surviving of eight children.
Belonging to this nation’s greatest generation, Rich was 17 years old when he joined the Navy during World War II. As the war ended, Rich was serving as a Seabee on Okinawa. Rich later reenlisted during the Korean War and was stationed at Alameda Naval Air Station and Midway Island.
Upon discharge from the Navy, Rich went back to New Castle and married the love of his life, Mary Ellen Palmer, on Oct. 13, 1956. They were married for 44 years until Mary’s passing in August 2001. Together they made their home in Struthers, where they raised their three children, Patti (Emil) Sanchez, Wendy (Sergio) Delgado and Rick (Alette) Bodendorfer.
Of his various jobs, Rich retired from LTV Steel, previously Youngstown Sheet & Tube, in 1984 after working in the coke plant for 27 years until the mill shut down.
Rich had faith in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church.
As a fan of the Cleveland Indians, Rich listened to or watched nearly every game. He was an avid collector of coins and stamps. Rich enjoyed his family, gardening, puzzles, watching old movies, especially westerns, playing cards, horseshoes, and bocce, and visiting friends while supporting his local AMVETS and VFW.
Rich is survived by his three children; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Rich requested no funeral services, just a toast to his long, happy life that he was so blessed to have lived.
Arrangements are being handled by Davidson-Becker Funeral Home, Struthers.
