Robert J. DeGeorge 1947-2025

STRUTHERS — Robert J. DeGeorge, 77, passed away Tuesday morning, Jan. 14, 2025, at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.

Born May 1, 1947, in Youngstown, he was the son of Frank and Concetta Marchese DeGeorge.

Bob, as he was affectionately known, was raised in Youngstown and attended East High School before enlisting in the United States Army. He proudly served from 1965 until receiving an honorable discharge in 1966.

Following his military service, Bob returned to the area and married the former Margaret Widener on Aug. 24, 1968. Together, they made their home in Struthers and celebrated nearly 44 years of marriage until Margaret’s passing, Aug. 9, 2012.

Bob dedicated a significant portion of his career to Norfolk Southern, where he worked as a locomotive engineer for 39 years before retiring. His commitment to his community was evident during his 10 years as a Struthers City councilman representing the 3rd Ward. Additionally, Bob was actively involved with the Struthers PTA when his children were growing up and shared the role of BlueBird parent with his wife. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Struthers Council 4224.

In his younger years, Bob enjoyed bowling, golfing, fishing and shooting pool. He particularly loved riding his Harley-Davidson trike, found great joy in giving rides to his grandchildren and especially cherished rides with his wife.

Bob will be lovingly remembered for his jovial personality, which often included his quick wit, being quite the jokester and the best hugs. Bob used humor to make people laugh because he never wanted to see anyone sad or unhappy.

Bob leaves to carry on his memory, his three daughters, Concetta (Greg) Peck of Seven Hills, Melissa (Tim Berger) DeGeorge of Struthers and Nicole (Kenneth) McGrath of Struthers; eight grandchildren, Alysa, Chase, Mariah, Paige, Kira, Ayla, Peyton and Nash; and great-grandchildren, Mason and Teegan.

In addition to his parents and wife, Bob was preceded in death by his siblings, Francis DeGeorge, Elena DeGeorge, Patricia Jones, James DeGeorge and Carolyn Decker; and great-granddaughter, Madison.

Family and friends will be received 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24, 2025, and 9 to 9:45 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, 2025, at Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, 270 N. Main St., Poland.

A funeral service will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, 2025, at the funeral home, with interment to follow in St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery.
