Thomas S. Schurko 1938-2025
YOUNGSTOWN — Thomas S. Schurko, 86, passed away peacefully, Monday, Jan. 13, 2025, at Hampton Woods.
He was born May 3, 1938, in Youngstown, a son of the late Steve and Katherine Halchalk Schurko.
He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and then joined the United States Coast Guard. He then went back to school, earning a bachelor’s degree from Youngstown State University.
Throughout his life, Tom embraced a variety of careers. He began as a manufacturing supervisor at Commercial Shearing, moved on to become an insurance auditor and eventually earned his funeral director’s license, dedicating many years to helping families at Kubina-Yuhasz-Wasko Funeral Home.
Tom found great fulfillment in supporting others during difficult times and took pride in being a trusted part of his community. Though he sometimes came across as stubborn or tough, those who knew him well recognized his warm and generous spirit. His mischievous twinkle and signature grin, especially when playfully teasing loved ones, were trademarks of his personality.
Tom’s hobbies brought him great joy.
He treasured time with his grandchildren, enjoyed working on his ham radio and loved taking drives with his faithful dog, Molly, by his side. He was an active member of St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church, often volunteering for bingo nights, and proudly served with the Knights of Columbus, demonstrating his strong commitment to his faith and community.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his beloved wife, the former Dolores Bezjak; his children, Cathy (Jeff) DiPietro of Boardman, Marci (Bill) Rowland of Boardman, Steve (Josie) Schurko of Hermitage, Pa., and Robert (Trish) Schurko of Stow; his grandchildren, Ryan DiPietro, Brianna Schurko, Corey Schurko, Tyler Schurko, Paige (Mark) Brooks, Ashley DiPietro and Mariah (Dom) Liva; and great-grandchildren, Carson and Bella.
