Walter (Vladmir) Rusnak 1937-2025
CAMPBELL — Walter (Vladimir) Rusnak, 87, passed away peacefully and surrounded by his loving family, Friday, Jan. 3, 2025, at Hospice House in Poland.
Walter was born June 17, 1937, in Campbell, a son of George and Mary Simko Rusnak.
He was a 1955 graduate of Campbell Memorial High School. Walter served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1958 and he was an original member of the first committee to write the Campbell Charter in 1969.
Walter married the love of his life, the former Laurissa Sirilla, on June 27, 1964, and they were married until her passing, Sept. 30, 2022.
He then went on to YSU to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in education, a master’s degree from Westminster College and a Doctorate from Akron University.
Walter served on the Campbell Board of Education from 1997 to 2001.
Walter worked as a teacher at Sheridan School and later worked as a professor of sociology and statistics at YSU, where he was also assistant director of admissions.
He was a member of St. John Orthodox Church, where he was a member of the Senior O Club, the Ohio District Male Chorus, sub deacon and past council president.
Walter will be deeply missed and always remembered by his children, George (Tracey) Rusnak of Campbell, Melanie Rusnak of Poland and John Rusnak of Canfield; his grandsons, Zachary, George, Luke, Joshua, Joseph and Adam; godchildren, Michael Puskas and David Livosky; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Laurissa; two brothers and three sisters.
The Rusnak family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home in Campbell. Calling hours will be 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2025 at the funeral home, where a Panachida prayer service will be at 7 p.m.
Calling hours will be held again 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, 2025, at St. John Orthodox Church in Campbell, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m., officiated by the Rev. Andrew Bartek.
Walter will be laid to rest in St. John Orthodox Cemetery.
