Gary Kalbasky 1950-2025

STRUTHERS — Gary Kalbasky, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away in the early hours Thursday morning, Feb. 6, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He faced complications from pancreatic cancer with the same strength and tenacity he showcased throughout his life.

Born on Sept. 25, 1950, in Youngstown, Gary was the son of Eugene and Katherine Olinik Kalbasky.

Raised in Youngstown, he graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in the Class of 1968. He continued his education at Youngstown State University, where he became a life member of Delta Chi Fraternity, creating bonds of friendship that would last a lifetime.

Gary proudly served in the United States Air Force Reserves at the Ravenna Air Base.

He dedicated 30 years to his professional career at Cold Metal Products, and also shared his compassion as a Funeral Associate, helping bereaved families in various capacities at Kubina Yuhasz Funeral Home in Boardman. He later took on the role of community service director for the City of Struthers under the guidance of Judge James Lanzo and, in his retirement, enjoyed delivering parts for Jim Pace Pontiac.

Gary had numerous passions and hobbies. He was an active and loyal member of the YMCA Leaders Club since childhood, he had a lifelong love for motorcycles and cars, with countless weekends spent at car shows. He was an avid movie buff, attending films weekly, and a devoted fan of all Ohio sports teams, with special affection for the Ohio State Buckeyes. He relished the exhilaration of watching them claim victory in the National Championship against Notre Dame. Gary also treasured time spent catching up on current events with friends at Dunkin Donuts in Poland, enjoyed golfing weekly with his buddies, and found joy in the loyalty and companionship of his dogs.

As an only child, Gary deeply valued his time with his beloved wife, Joanne, and her extensive family, creating a home filled with love and cherished memories. His greatest pride, however, came from his grandchildren whom he adored and supported in their musical and sporting pursuits.

Gary leaves behind his cherished wife of over 50 years, the former Joanne Damico, whom he married on July 13, 1974; his son, Gary (Anissa) Kalbasky Jr. of Boardman; his daughter, Lisa (Andrew) Saxon of Girard; brothers-in-law, Nick (Barbara) Damico of Columbus and Jim “Moose” (Judy) Damico of Salem; niece, Nicole (David) Powell of Columbus; nephew, Jimmy (Morgan) Damico of Hilton Head; and his beloved grandchildren who were the light of his life, Dominic and Ava Kalbasky, and Gianna and Brinley Saxon; and numerous cousins, extended family, and friends.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects from 4 until 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10, 2025, at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home in Struthers.

A prayer service will be 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2025, at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at his parish, Christ Our Savior Parish at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Struthers, with Fr. Philip Rogers officiating.

Interment will follow at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery in Lowellville.

Gary “Killer” Kalbasky’s warmth, laughter and unwavering love will be profoundly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
