Helen M. Walihnac 1930-2025

YOUNGSTOWN — Helen Yatsco Walihnac, 94, passed away peacefully, Sunday, Feb. 16, 2025.
Helen was born July 22, 1930, in Campbell, a daughter of Michael and Alice Hamrock Yatsco.
She was a 1948 graduate of Campbell Memorial High School and a lifelong resident of the area.
Helen married John Walihnac in April 1958. They remained together until his passing in May 1983.
Helen worked at the downtown Woolworth store for over 40 years as a clerk in the hardware and pet departments.
She was a member of Christ the Good Shepherd Parish (formerly St. John the Baptist) and was a member of the Legion of Mary.
Helen volunteered as a foster grandmother at Tod Children’s Hospital. She loved cats and would feed the neighborhood strays. Helen was an avid bowler and sports fanatic, especially when it came to Cleveland Browns football. Her favorite pastime was occasionally playing lottery scratch-offs.
Helen will be deeply missed and always remembered by her sisters, Dorothy Makosky of Youngstown and Cynthia Makosky of Ashtabula; sister-in-law, Rita Smrek; and many beloved nieces and nephews; along with her special friends and neighbors.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; her brother, Fred; sister-in-law, Ginny Yatsco; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Theresa and Andrew Hripko, Veronica and Michael Gleydura, George Makosky and Edward Smrek.
Helen’s family has entrusted her care to the Wasko Funeral Home in Campbell.
Calling hours will be noon to 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, 2025, at the funeral home, followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m.
Helen will be laid to rest in St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Cemetery in Lowellville.
