Irene A. Nemeth 1933-2025
YOUNGSTOWN — Irene A. Nemeth, 91, of Youngstown’s West Side, passed away peacefully, early Wednesday morning, Feb. 5, 2025, at Hospice House.
Irene was born July 25, 1933, in Youngstown, a daughter of the late John and Anna Kovach Sandor, and was a lifelong area resident. She was a 1951 graduate of Chaney High School, and soon embarked on a career that balanced hard work and family devotion. Irene worked at S.H. Kress Co. in downtown Youngstown, JCPenney, and Bertelli Homes as the business manager, where she dedicated 35 years to her profession while nurturing her growing family.
Irene was a woman of faith and active community involvement. She was a member of the former St. Stephen of Hungary Church and later Holy Apostles Parish. Her Hungarian heritage was a source of pride, reflected in her involvement with the Hungarian Club, where she served as treasurer. Known for her love of gardening, Irene’s vibrant roses were admired by neighbors and friends alike. However, her greatest joy was her family, with whom she treasured every moment spent together.
Irene’s memory will be carried on by her daughters, Irene Devlin, Susan Willis and Christine Nemeth, all of Youngstown; her granddaughters, Michele Blair of Williamsburg, Virginia, Jessica Cardelein of Youngstown, Sara-Ann (Cody) Edwards of Youngstown and Carly (Kevin) LaPresta of Akron; seven great-grandchildren, Kayla Blair, Emily Stafford, Justine (Zac) Velez, Aimee Stafford, Cooper Cardelein, Kaydyn Cardelein and Crue Twyford; eight great-great-grandchildren, Oliver Warrick, Jamison Velez, Theodore Velez, Lorelei Velez, Claire Ava Edwards, Angel LaPresta, Alyssa Lapresta and Aleia LaPresta; a cousin and close friend, Linda Perry Higgins of Wisconsin; and many extended family members.
Irene’s kindness, strength and love will remain forever in the hearts of all who knew her.
Her husband of 29 years, George S. Nemeth, whom she married Sept. 25, 1951, died Oct. 8, 1980.
Her grandson, Sean Vincent Devlin; brothers, Frank, John and Steven Sandor; and a sister, Margaret Maty, also preceded Irene in death.
Family and friends may call 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 10, 2025, at Holy Apostles Parish-SS. Peter and Paul Church, 421 Covington St., Youngstown, where a Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m.
Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown, where Irene will be laid to rest beside her husband.
