Jimmy D. Saffell 1945-2025

STRUTHERS — Jimmy D. Saffell, 79, passed away peacefully Thursday evening, Feb. 6, 2025.

Jim was born July 5, 1945, in Andalusia, Alabama, a son of James Francis Saffell and Ruby Lee Ramer Saffell.

He graduated from Boardman High School in 1963.

Jim served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.

He was a hard worker in different mills in Youngstown. He later worked for the Youngstown Post Office, working at the Cornersburg Post Office and the Poland Post Office, where he retired after 33 years in 2011.

Jim was a Golden Eagle at the Fraternal Order of Eagles #213 of Youngstown and #3298 of Austintown, where he enjoyed gathering with friends, fun times at the clubs, and playing Santa for the kids party. He was also a member of AMVETS Post 44 of Struthers.

In his free time, Jim enjoyed fishing, bowling, NASCAR, being a fan of the Washington Redskins, traveling to Frankenmuth, Michigan, every year for shopping, and mixing the dough for kolachi every year with his wife, Sandy, and son, Doug.

Jim will be remembered by his wife of 58 years, the former Sandra Rae George, whom he met over a busy signal on the phone in 1963, and they married on May 20, 1967; his two children, Michelle Ann Saffell of Poland and Douglas James (Kiyomi) Saffell of Jasper, Alabama; five grandchildren, Alysa DeGeorge, Mariah (Josh) Mitchel, Kira DeGeorge, Dewey Saffell and Anthoney Saffell; and one great-grandchild, Teegan-Renae DeGeorge.

Besides his parents, Jim was preceded in death by two sisters, Diane Dauble and Lynn Vinzant.

Family and friends may call from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2025, at Davidson-Becker Funeral Home, 11 Spring St. in Struthers. A funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. at the funeral home, with full military honors.

Interment will follow in Green Haven Memorial Gardens in Canfield.
