Judith Ann Carson 1938-2025

YOUNGSTOWN — Judith Ann “Judy” Carson, 86, passed away peacefully, Saturday, Jan. 25, 2025, at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital.

She was born July 22, 1938, in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Randall and Edith Hunter Rothgeb. She graduated from Boardman High School in 1956. She then graduated from Youngstown State University with a bachelor’s degree in education in 1960 and furthered her education by earning a Master of Library Science degree from Kent State University in the mid-1980s.

She worked for West Boulevard Elementary School from 1961 to 1969 and then at Boardman Center Middle School as a librarian from 1982 until her retirement in the early 2000s.

Judy was a member of Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon for several years, demonstrating her faith and commitment to helping others.

Her passion for giving back extended to her involvement in numerous organizations, including the Junior League of Youngstown, the Youngstown Garden Club and the Paisley House, where she served as a board member. She was also an active participant in the Boardman Swim Club and Whimsis, an arts and crafts club known for its Christmas ornaments and home decor creations.

Gardening was her greatest joy. She had a gift for garden design and an extraordinary green thumb. A lifelong lover of books, she spent much of her teaching career as a librarian and continued to share her enthusiasm for reading by starting a book club at Shepherd of the Valley.

Judy found peace and happiness near the water, spending many summers on the shores of Lake Erie collecting beach glass with her granddaughters. Alongside her hobbies, she enjoyed cooking, staying informed on politics, and in later years, became quite the formidable bridge player.

More than anything, she was a devoted mother, a doting grandmother and a cherished friend. Her vibrant spirit will be remembered and missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Judy leaves behind her children, Jay (Jill) Carson of Lakewood and Carey Carson of Los Angeles, California; and her grandchildren, Emma, Audrey and Claire Carson, all of Lakewood.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Robert R. “Bob” Rothgeb.

A memorial celebration of life will take place for Judith at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that material contributions be made to Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens, 123 McKinley Ave., Youngstown, OH 44509, www.friendsoffellows.org/donations, in her memory.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Davis-Becker Funeral Home in Boardman. Please visit www.beckerobits.com to send the family condolences and share your memories.
