Margaret J. Goddard 1932-2025

YOUNGSTOWN – Margaret Joyce Goddard, known to everyone as Joyce or Granny, passed away peacefully, Thursday, Jan. 9, 2025, at the age of 92, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter and unwavering faith.
Born Oct. 26, 1932, in Howesville, W.Va., Joyce found her true home in Youngstown, where she lived a life full of joy and devotion. Joyce was the youngest daughter of Edward and Catherine Farrell Swearengen and was surrounded by a loving family despite the challenges of growing up during difficult times. Her heart was open and warm, a trait cultivated by her humble upbringing.
Her love story with Dallas “Dale” Goddard began more than six decades ago. They were married Dec. 17, 1955, an event that marked the beginning of a beautiful journey together. Although Dale passed on before her, their shared life fostered deep love and numerous cherished memories that live on through their family.
Because she lost her parents at a very young age, Joyce’s family was her crowning achievement and greatest source of pride.
A devoted mother, she loved spending time with her girls, including as their Girl Scout troop leader. Her presence brought the family together and everyone knew that Saturdays meant dinner at Granny’s house.
Joyce found solace in her faith and her deep sense of spirituality guided her throughout her life. As a devoted member of Sacred Heart Church in Youngstown, she immersed herself in community and church life. Her role as a Eucharistic minister and teacher of catechism and Sunday school classes was not just a duty but a heartfelt calling. She touched many lives with her vibrant spirit and compassionate heart.
Joyce was a woman who embodied kindness and generosity. Quick with a hug and a word of encouragement, she had a unique gift for making everyone feel valued and loved. Her home was a sanctuary for family, friends and anyone who needed comfort. Full of life and laughter, she was often caught singing and dancing to her own tune — a joyous expression of her indomitable spirit.
She leaves behind her daughters, Ruth Ann (Victor) Maillis, Mary Jane (Angel) Class and Sandra Cercone.
She was blessed with 11 grandchildren, Angela (Dan) Duskey, Selena (Jeff Gill) Class, Jacqueline Maillis, Rob (Danielle) Class, Katie (Ryan) Peters, Jenna Cercone, Meghan (Steve) Simerlink, Marra (Becky) Vano-Cercone, Michelle (Mark) Gilbert, Nicole (Bubba) Maillis and Manuel Maillis; numerous great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter, each of whom carries with them the tender lessons and loving memories of their Granny. She will also be fondly remembered by her sister-in-law, Joan Swearengen, and her many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale; her parents and siblings, Marie, Jane, Pete, Bob, Alice, John and Bill; and her great-granddaughter. They are all fondly remembered.
We invite all who knew and loved Joyce to join us in remembrance.
Visitation will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, 2025, at Rossi Brothers and Lellio Funeral Home, followed by a memorial service at noon. This gathering will be a celebration of her life, a tribute to a woman who loved deeply and was deeply loved in return.
Joyce’s family would like to thank Mercy Health Hospice of the Valley for their excellent care over the last year. The team was a blessing and helped give her family the ability to care for her at home during her journey with Alzheimer’s disease.
Margaret Joyce Goddard leaves behind a legacy of love, warmth and faith. Her spirit will continue to inspire and guide those she left behind. We celebrate her life with gratitude and cherish the beautiful memories she created in her 92 years with us.
Family and friends are encouraged to offer prayers for the family and support via phone call, text or email, or you may visit the Book of Memories at www.rossifunerals.com.
