Mary C. Smidt 1928-2025

POLAND — Mary Catherine Smidt, 96, passed away Thursday, Feb. 20, 2025, at the Inn at Poland Way surrounded by her children.

Born on Aug. 21, 1928, in Youngstown, she was a daughter to the late Wesley and Margaret Higgins Gotshall. She was lovingly raised by her aunt and uncle, Ralph and Nora McCarty.

Mary was a 1947 graduate of South High School. She met the love of her life, Wesley “Don,” and the two married in 1953, sharing 64 beautiful years of marriage until his passing in 2017. Mary and Wesley welcomed their three children and were later blessed with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was known for her exceptional culinary skills, often delighting her family with her famous homemade chili, apple dumplings and an array of cookies. A naturally gifted craftsperson, Mary also showcased her love for nature through her ownership of a flower shop, where her green thumb flourished, bringing beauty and joy to her community. You could often find her outside tending to her yard and to the array of beautiful flowers she grew.

Mary’s unwavering love for her family was evident in every aspect of her life. She cherished her role as a wife, mother and “GG,” celebrating the lives and milestones of her grandchildren with enthusiasm. Her enduring spirit and nurturing presence will be deeply missed by her loved ones.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her children Kimberly Poma of Hillard, Sherri Eger of Poland and Kevin (Denise) Smidt of Canfield; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Richard (Carol) Wagner, Donald McCarty and James McCarty.

In addition to her parents; her aunt and uncle, Ralph and Nora; and her husband, she was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Jim Poma; brother-in-law, Leslie Smidt; and her sisters-in-law, Judy McCarty, Marge McCarty and Sandy McCarty.

Calling hours will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2025, with a funeral service to immediately follow at the Davis-Becker, 8536 Market St., Boardman, OH 44512.
