Bonita Schoessel 1934-2025

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Bonita Person Schoessel, 90, on Friday, Feb. 28, 2025.

Born Oct. 27, 1934, in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Herbert and Yvonne Chabut Person, Bonnie was a spirit full of life, warmth and an insatiable curiosity. She left an indelible mark on the lives she touched.

Bonnie was a proud graduate of Boardman High School in 1953 and continued her education at Northern Virginia Community College, where she earned an associate degree in art history. A dedicated medical assistant for 31 years, she provided compassionate care to her patients while working alongside various doctors in the healthcare industry.

Married to her devoted husband, William M. Schoessel Jr., a Navy Seal, whom she married Feb. 2, 1957, together they learned about submarines, a pursuit that she passionately dived into — both figuratively and literally. Her love for history extended to her cherished homestead in Mount Vernon, located on one of George Washington’s farms, a place she adored and treasured.

Bonnie is also survived by two daughters, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren back in Virginia.

In honor of Bonnie’s life, calling hours will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, March 21, 2025, at Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Boardman-Canfield Chapel.

Bonnie will be laid to rest in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
