He was born Dec. 17, 1938, in Birmingham, Alabama, the son of Willie and Rosa Gardner Pruitt. Fred graduated from Holy Family High School and followed his dream of becoming a doctor. He continued his education at Howard University in Washington, D.C., where he earned his undergraduate degree. Fred then attended and graduated from Meharry Medical College.

Fred returned to the Youngstown area in 1972 to do his residency at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, and seeing the need to help others, opened his own practice in 1974, along with continuing as part of the staff at St. Elizabeth. Throughout his career, Dr. Pruitt was known not only for his exceptional medical expertise but also for his deep compassion and commitment to patients’ well-being. He was admired by colleagues for his integrity, work ethic and ability to make difficult decisions with care and empathy.

Dr. Pruitt leaves behind a legacy of healing, kindness and service which will continue to inspire all those who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.

Fred had many passions throughout his life. He enjoyed golfing, reading and traveling, but he especially loved spending time with his family. He was a grill master with BBQ and always looked forward to hosting family parties and reunions.

Fred leaves behind to hold onto his memories, the love of his life, his wife of over 19 years, the former Marie Carlini, whom he married May 28, 2005; his sons, Dr. Chris (Val) Pruitt and Patsy Carlini-Pruitt; his beloved granddaughter, Alexis; and his brother, Dr. Carl (Cheryl) Pruitt.
