George I. Strain 1942-2025

GIRARD — George I Strain, 82, passed away Thursday, March 20, 2025, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his daughters.

George at last after all the years of struggling and missing his beautiful wife Joan, he is now reunited with her for eternity.

George was born July 3, 1942, in Youngstown, a son to the late George G. and Thelma Pletcher Strain.

He was a 1960 graduate of Liberty High School and attended Youngstown State University.

George worked at US Steel in McDonald and would later open and own with his wife Joan, Arco Gas Station in Girard and Liberty Towing and Garage until his retirement. They loved helping the community and participating in the Girard parade.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Girard.

George enjoyed running, taking Joan on cruises, trips to the casino and spending time with his family. He loved writing a poem every New Year’s Eve including each family member at the table fittingly.

For many years you could find him running the streets of Girard, McDonald and Liberty. Later he was a staple nightly at the visitor bleachers at Arrow Head Stadium!

He promoted cancer testing annually following Joan’s cancer in hopes of saving just one person.

George and Joan were blessed with three daughters, Wendy (Jeff) Hughes and Holly (David) Hunkus, both of Liberty Township, and Heather (Phil) Walters of Girard; and grandchildren, Tealle Hunkus, Daniel and Michael (Marissa) Delliquadri, Alexandria (Andrew) Dean, David Hunkus, Morgan and Taylor Walters, Nicole Hughes, Bailey Walters and Phillip (PJ) Walters; and great-grandchildren, Julian, Gianna and Jacob Dean, and his namesake, Michael George Delliquadri.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Flowers Strain, whom he married March 6, 1962, and lived happily until her passing on Aug. 30, 2013; and brother, Tom Strain.

A funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday, March 24, 2025, at Blackstone Funeral Home in Girard, where the family will receive relatives and friends 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

George will be laid to rest in Poland Riverside Cemetery next to Joan.
