Laney L. Heard 1925-2025
YOUNGSTOWN — Laney L. Heard, 100, passed away peacefully, Saturday, March 1, 2025. She was born Feb. 11, 1925, in Camp Hill, Alabama, to the union of the late Grady and Mary Bell Mackey.
Mother Laney was a member of Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church, where she served on a nurses and mission ministries. She was instrumental in the upbringing of her grandchildren. Mother Laney will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by one son, Lorenzo (Donna) Heard; two daughters, Vivian (Arthur L.) Holmes and Debra (Curtis) Lucky; daughter-in-love, Sandra Heard; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Her husband James, whom she married Nov. 16, 1947, preceded her in death, March 14, 1996. She was also preceded in death by her son, Lance; grandson, Arthur Holmes III; three sisters, Thelma Jackson, Annie Bell Griffin and Willie V. Holloway; and three brothers, Huria, Grady Jr. and William.
A special heartfelt thanks is extended to the caring staff of Akesko Hospice who provided great comfort in her final days.
Calling hours will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 8, 2025, at Elizabeth Baptist Church, 1210 Himrod Ave., with funeral services to follow at 11 a.m., with Pastor J. Dwayne Heard as celebrant.
Following the committal service, Mother Laney will be laid to rest alongside her husband and soul mate, James, in Tod Homestead Cemetery.
