Edward H. Rice Sr. 1933-2025

Born Jan. 16, 1933, in Girard, Edward led a life marked by dedicated service, unwavering commitment to his community and profound love for his family. Throughout most of Edwards’ life, he worked two or more jobs to support his family, an unselfish act of love for his family.

After attending high school, Edward enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving honorably for four years and becoming a veteran of the Korean War. His military service instilled in him a deep sense of duty and discipline, along with an unwavering love for his country, family and friends that he carried throughout his life.

Following his time in the Air Force, Edward embarked on a distinguished career at Mackenzie Muffler, where he worked for 25 years. His leadership qualities shone brightly as he took on the role of union leader, advocating tirelessly for his fellow workers’ rights and well-being. Edward’s commitment to worker safety led him to serve as a safety inspector for the State of Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation for another 25 years, ensuring safer workplaces for countless individuals.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Edward dedicated 25 years as a volunteer firefighter in Girard, exemplifying his selfless commitment to protecting and serving his community. After he retired from the fire station, his mornings were often spent sharing stories and coffee with fellow firemen, a cherished routine that continued into his retirement.

Family was the cornerstone of Edward’s life. He was married to his beloved wife, Mary Pauline Rice, for over 69 years, a partnership that stood as a testament to enduring love and mutual support. Edward took immense pride in helping raise his grandchildren and was a steadfast presence at their various activities, cheering them on in football, softball, soccer, track, competitive cheerleading and dancing. For those of us who had that personal connection with Edward, understood when he was asked by an official to maintain his coolness or leave a competitive event, his passionate love for his grandchildren was often vocalized to a referee or judge at events all in heartfelt support for his grandchildren.

Edward was preceded in death by his mother, Bernice Irene Rice; and three sisters, Dorothy Baragona, Sandra Maiorana and Diane Hilston; and his son, Rocco William Rice.

He is survived by his loving wife, Mary; his brother, John Douglas Rice; his son, Edward Jr.; his devoted daughter, Lisa, and son-in-law, Richard Kovacs of Florida. At his side every morning was his girl, Piper, a 10-year-old shih tzu, who waited for Edward to give her ice each and every day.

Edward’s legacy lives on through his cherished grandchildren — Adriane, Jade, Phillip, Nicholas, Mackenzie and Maddie – as well as his 12 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren, along with his many nieces and nephews who all simply loved and cherished Edward.

Edward’s life was a beacon of service, dedication and love. His unwavering commitment to his family, community and country leaves an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
