DEAR EDITOR:

On Jan. 20, Donald Trump claimed he was saved by God to make America great again.

As Ronald Lindsay succinctly puts it in a recent blog post, “The notion that God directs the outcome of assassination attempts is, of course, magical thinking at its worst. Among other tragic events, this belief implies that God directed Booth’s bullet into Lincoln’s brain. It is rarely good news when a leader is convinced he is God’s chosen instrument. The leader’s plans become God’s plans; his commands, God’s commands; and those who resist him, God’s enemies.”

Our First Amendment says the government cannot promote one religion over others, Trump’s over yours or mine.
