Our congressmen must act now
DEAR EDITOR:
An open letter to U.S. Rep. Mike Rulli:
As one of your constituents I am writing this open letter to ask that you take great urgency in recognizing the drift towards authoritarian governance manifesting itself in our country.
I urge you to begin doing everything in your power as a member of Congress to resist the terrifying idiocy unfolding before your very eyes, because we are quickly entering a period of perilous danger to everyone in this country.
We are on the verge of abandoning our once iron-clad alliance with NATO, our allies were shaken to the bone watching Rubio meet with Lavrov (ala Ribbentrop with Stalin) while Hegseth made a complete fool of himself insulting our strongest European allies and friends.
A sociopath sits behind the Resolute desk fantasizing about making Canada the 51st state, “buying” Greenland (and renaming it Red White and Blueland!), “taking Panama back”, sending troops into Mexico to “kill the cartels,” and wide range of other obviously pathological delusions that are so insane that if it were any other person they’d be put in a straitjacket and carted off for observation and treatment.
At the UN Trump raised his voice high: For the first time since the end of WWII the US now sides with Russia’s version of historical record and turned its back on its long-standing world allies. We now cast our support with a 16-member club of corrupt, fanatical, murderous, authoritarian rogue states.
Surely you clearly see this happening and must have some sense of heightened alarm, right? Please, give us some hint that you’re at least mildly conscious of the serious danger that’s staring you directly in the face.
Please, I urge you: put all matter of nonsense that you normally engage in aside for a while. Cosponsoring asinine bills like the transphobic H.R. 1016 restroom bill or H.R.943 and H.R. 631, both fever dreams of the NRA or MTG’s H.R. 276 to rename the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America, is not in the best interests of your constituents or the country. It’s wasteful, performative nonsense and insulting to everyone who expects their representatives to serve their best interests.
Please, and with all due respect, I am humbly asking you: please, if even for a brief moment, pull your head out of your ass and take a careful look around you. The extreme danger of falling into a malaise of autocratic and authoritarian governance, complete international chaos (with catastrophic economic consequences) is real and present. You have a sworn duty to defend against this insanity in every way that you possibly can. The very least you could do is to stand up and proclaim that this insanity will not continue on your watch.
