Canfield’s Lowry wins POY award
The awards keep on coming for Canfield quarterback Broc Lowry.
The senior, who recently enrolled early to play football at Indiana University, has been named the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association Art Treynor Player of the Year.
In the school’s first state championship appearance, Lowry led Canfield to a state title in December and left his mark on the school in more ways than one.
Lowry, who committed to the Hoosiers ahead of his senior season, set countless offensive records at Canfield. He holds the single-season total yardage record after accumulating 3,621 yards this season. He rushed for 1,702 yards and 26 touchdowns while also passing for 1,756 yards and 16 touchdowns. He completed 144 passes this season, which is also a school record.
In Canfield’s regional semifinal win over Ursuline, Lowry ran for 217 yards and three touchdowns. Then, after leading the Cardinals past Chardon, who had knocked them out of the playoffs the last two seasons, Lowry propelled the Cardinals into the state championship game with another gutsy performance.
In a win over Holy Name, Lowry rushed for 228 yards and four touchdowns and also passed for 117 yards.
He saved his best performance for last though as he totaled 285 yards and five touchdowns in the state championship game against Bloom-Carroll. Lowry also became the first player to rush for a touchdown, pass for one, and catch a touchdown pass in a state championship game.
