Youngstown State women’s basketball loses at Xavier 61-43

The Youngstown State women’s basketball team suffered a second consecutive defeat Tuesday with a 61-43 loss at Xavier.

The Penguins fell behind early — they were outscored 22-12 in the first quarter — and despite outscoring the Musketeers 13-11 in the second, another poor quarter to begin the second half put the Penguins behind by 18. YSU and Xavier each scored 10 points in the final period.

Jewel Watkins finished Tuesday’s game as the only Penguins player with double-digit points (14). Xavier’s Meri Kanerva scored a game-high 17 points and made four of her six three-point attempts.

As a team, the Penguins shot 39% (16-for-41) from the field, 15.8% (3-for-19) on threes and 40% (8-for-20) at the free-throw line.

Tuesday’s loss was YSU’s second in a row; after winning each of their first four games, all at home, the Penguins lost on the road vs. Bucknell on Saturday 51-36. YSU similarly shot poorly vs. the Bison, who held the Penguins to 15% from the field and 12.5% on three-pointers.

YSU will now head to San Juan, Puerto Rico, where the Penguins will take part in the Puerto Rico Clasico over the holiday weekend. YSU begins the tournament with a game vs. Southern Indiana on Friday at 11 am. ET. The Penguins then play Towson on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. ET.

Starting at $2.99/week.
