BOYS BASKETBALL

West Branch 60, Howland 55 – In Beloit, Gavin Gregory came up one rebound shy of a double-double. The West Branch Warrior scored a game-high 19 points with nine boards. Camden Lane knocked down a pair of threes on his way to 15 points. For the Tigers, Steven Bubon tallied 13 points, and Luca Naples pitched in 12.

Columbiana 40, Springfield 39 – At Columbiana High School, the Clippers held on to improve to 6-0. Seth Struharik scored 17 points to lead Columbiana. Carter Johnson scored eight points, and Hunter Devanzo pulled down nine rebounds. Isaac Lamorticella was the Tigers’ leading scorer with 15 points.

Liberty 60, Conneaut 35 – At Liberty High School, the Leopards’ defense in the first half created plenty of breathing room. Liberty limited the Spartans to eight points in the first quarter and five in the second as it took a 32-13 lead into the locker room. Evan Bates was one of four Leopards in double figures, scoring a game-best 13 points. Dearmani Franklin chipped in 11 points, and Luke Bates and Ramsey Hadi-Cox both scored 10.

Mineral Ridge 60, Lordstown 25 – Chase Moore powered the Rams’ offense with 26 points. Kaden Shaffer added 11 points, and Jordan Moore and Blake Basista each had five. Lordstown stats were not submitted.

St. John 58, Chalker 28 – At Chalker, the Wildcats couldn’t keep up with St. John. Chalker surrendered 32 points in the second quarter as St. John took a 48-13 lead into halftime. Colton Levensky and Zach Pack both scored seven points for the Wildcats.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Girard 63, Salem 28 – At Salem High School, the Indians came away with a one-sided win thanks to a 24-point performance from Brooke Perry. Makenzee White added 13 points, and Aly Gassman scored 12. Reese Davidson-Chuck led the Quakers with five points.

Chalker 66, St. John 38 – Abby Grimm couldn’t be stopped as she scored nearly half of Chalker’s points. Grimm finished with 30 points, and she got a 14-point performance from teammate Riley Ashcraft. Kelsey Kren added seven points for the Wildcats.

Howland 70, Madison 47 – During the Toni Ross Spirit Foundation Tournament, Howland coupled offense and defense in a blowout victory. The Tigers didn’t allow Madison to score more than 13 points in any quarter. Zoey Detaganis took charge of the Tigers’ offense, finishing with 24 points. Leah Brock pitched in eight points, and Gianna Lamarco tallied seven.

Maplewood 55, Lakeview 50 – The Bulldogs tried posting a comeback, but the deficit was too much to overcome. The Rockets led 33-22 at halftime, but the Bulldogs held them to eight points in the fourth quarter while trying to claw back. Morgan Himes was Maplewood’s leading scorer with 15 points, and Katie Wear scored 10. Sophie Irwin led the Bulldogs with 15 points, and Mackenzie Stowe added 13.

Niles 58, Champion 28 – At Champion High School, a 32-point second quarter was all the Red Dragons needed to put the game out of reach. Niles led 43-18 at the break. The Red Dragons had four double-digit scorers, with Maddie Yost leading all scorers with 14 points. Caroline Cormell scored 13 points, and Kherington Stanford and Ava Ferri each recorded 10-point outings. Sami Munroe was the top Golden Flash with eight points.

Lisbon 45, East Palestine 36 – At East Palestine High School, the Bulldogs didn’t have enough firepower to pull out the win. Jacklyn Ogle and Emma Ginger each scored 12 points for the Bulldogs. Ogle recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds.

Garfield 60, Badger 23 – At Badger, Garfield jumped on the Braves early, taking a 16-7 lead by the end of the first quarter. They followed with a 20-point second period to break the game open. Kolby Fresch was the top Garfield scorer with 15 points, and Riley Grace added 14 as the duo combined for 18 of the team’s 36 first-half points. The Braves only had four girls score on the night, with Riley Thomas leading the way with seven points.

BOYS WRESTLING

Howland recorded a top-10 finish at the Hudson Holiday Tournament over the weekend. The Tigers finished ninth out of 27 teams. Deacon Mock took the 138-pound title, Aidan O’Donnell was third at 132, Brayden Cortese finished fourth in 106, Chris Mijavec was sixth in 215 and Cohen Rudesill recorded an eighth-place finish in 150.

GIRLS WRESTLING

Hubbard’s Madison Burns took second place at the Hubbard girls tournament this weekend. Burns was the runner-up in the 135-pound weight class, finishing the day with a 2-1 record. Her victories included a technical fall and a dominant 6-1 decision.

SWIMMING

At the Canton Christmas Invitational, Boardman’s Alex Taylor won the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.69 and Zac Mihok finished third with a time of 53.46 in the 100 backstroke. Boardman girls’ 200 free relay – consisting of Alex Taylor, Petra Crnjak, Abbi Mihok, and Gina DiNapoli – finished second with a time of 1:40.91 behind Mason.
