MVFC All-Conference unveiled

The Missouri Valley Football Conference released its All-Conference selections for the 2024 season on Monday, which included eight Youngstown State players earning honors.

YSU junior wide receiver Max Tomczak and sophomore quarterback Beau Brungard were selected for the All-MVFC First Team, however Brungard’s selection came as an all-purpose player.

In 12 games this season, Tomczak caught 73 passes for 904 yards and four touchdowns. Tomczak finished the season with the fourth-most receiving yards in the conference. Meanwhile, Brungard had an explosive season in his first year as the Penguins’ starting quarterback. He completed 66.6% of his passes for 2,141 yards and 12 touchdowns, while also rushing for 998 yards and 16 touchdowns. Brungard finished with the fourth-most rushing yards in the conference.

YSU senior offensive lineman Jaison Williams, senior long snapper Sam Merryman and junior punter Brendon Kilpatrick earned All-MVFC Second Team honors.

In 12 games, Kilpatrick led the conference in average yards per punt (46.0), while YSU was No. 1 in the FCS in net punting. Merryman continued to be a critical part of YSU’s special teams units and Williams proved to be one of the key parts of an offensive line that was a catalyst for the 15th-best rushing offense in the FCS.

Finally, cornerback Jaylen Castleberry, offensive lineman Desmeal Leigh and running back Tyshon King each earned All-MVFC Honorable Mentions from the conference.

North Dakota State quarterback Cam Miller was named Offensive Player of the Year after completing 74.2% of his passes for 2,340 yards and 23 touchdowns. He also ran for 370 yards and three touchdowns in leading the third-ranked Bison to a share of another conference championship.

South Dakota defensive lineman Mi’Quise Grace earned Defensive Player of the Year honors after tallying 50 tackles, while leading the conference in tackles-for-loss (17.0) and sacks (9.5). He helped the Coyotes to a No. 4 ranking and a share of the conference championship.

North Dakota State running back CharMar Brown was selected as the conference’s Newcomer of the Year and Freshman of the Year. He led the Bison’s ground attack with 965 yards and 14 touchdowns.

South Dakota head coach Bob Nielson was named Coach of the Year for the second straight season. The Coyotes earned a top-four seed the FCS playoffs for the second straight season and their share of the conference championship was a first for the program.
