Bucs add relief pitcher Alvarado to 40-man roster

The Pittsburgh Pirates added right-handed pitcher Elvis Alvarado to the 40-man roster on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old Alvarado spent a majority of the 2024 season with Triple-A Jacksonville, where he went 3-4 with 11 saves, a 2.79 ERA (48 1/3 innings and 15 earned runs) and 71 strikeouts (33.2 % strikeout rate) in 41 relief appearances.

Alvarado’s 11 saves ranked second among all Marlins minor leaguers and fifth in the International League. Alvarado also posted a 1.14 ERA (39 1/3 innings and five earned rusn), 63 strikeouts and .159 batting average against (21-for-132) in his final 32 outings with Jacksonville after recording a 10.00 ERA (nine innings and 10 earned runs) in seven outings at the Triple-A level in April.

Alvarado began his professional career as an outfielder with the Washington Nationals organization before being converted to a pitcher in 2018.

The 6’4” righthander has posted a career record of 15-14 with 23 saves, a 4.25 ERA (230 2/3 and 109 earned runs) and 257 strikeouts in 175 appearances (seven starts) in his minor league career.
