WEATHERSFIELD — About 24 hours after beating South Range by 35 points, the Mineral Ridge girls basketball team delivered a similar performance in its 63-31 home beating of McDonald on Thursday, extending the team’s win streak to six.

Led primarily by Sullivan Sandy, the Rams scored the first 10 points of the game and never gave the Blue Devils an opportunity to get back into the contest.

“Super happy with the girls’ effort,” Mineral Ridge coach Amy Harrison said. “They really came out ready to play, and it showed.”

Sandy accounted for the first eight points of the game and was soon joined by Ava Hulett in the scoring column. Powered by an effective 1-3-1 trap and the Sandy and Hulett duo, which combined for 41 total points, the Rams took a commanding 19-4 lead into the second quarter.

McDonald attempted to cut into the lead early in the second quarter; after being held scoreless for the final two minutes of the first, the Devils scored nine points in a span of three minutes in the second.

However, Ridge shut down any potential comeback for good with a dominant 12-0 run over the final three-and-a-half minutes going into the break to blow open its advantage to 25 points.

Coming out of the locker room, the Rams kept pouring it on, growing the lead from 25 to 36, the largest of the game. McDonald ended its more than eight-minute scoreless drought with 4:15 left in the third quarter with an Addison Grewell basket.

“Ridge is a really, really good team,” McDonald head coach Tyler Kilbourne said. “Amy does a great job with her girls, and they’re really smart. They play smart, they play hard and they’re really physical. Sometimes [we] struggle with that.”

While the Blue Devils got the deficit down to 27 points in the fourth quarter, during which Cierra Shiley scored six of her team-high 10 points, Ridge finished with back-to-back buckets late to put its edge back over 30.

“I think confidence,” Harrison said of the reason for the win streak. “Being sure of what our game is and being confident in the way we play has made a big difference. We decided this is our game plan [and] they’ve really followed that to a tee. Any changes we made, they’ve been able to do it. And I think that’s been really helpful.”

Amid the win streak, the last two victories for Ridge have been by a combined 67 points. But Harrison is not worried about her team losing focus or becoming unprepared after multiple lopsided wins.

“When you have an opportunity to play, play. Each game will be difficult. Just be ready,” Harrison said of her message to the Rams. “Game plan-wise, we try to always have them ready.”

As for the Blue Devils, whose four-game win streak was snapped with Thursday’s loss, it’s about learning some valuable lessons.

“When it’s your first year [as coach], you want to build a program up, and some of those things are that you got to have a good attitude when you’re on the court,” Kilbourne said. “Have to make sure you’re hustling the whole entire time. That’s something that we’re trying to focus on doing throughout the second half of the season here. When you’re losing — one thing I’ll say about my girls, my girls are super competitive, and they hate losing. [When] games go like this, it’s tough.”

McDonald (9-6, 4-4 in Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference) plays the third of five straight away games Saturday when the Blue Devils visit Campbell Memorial.

Mineral Ridge (12-3, 9-0) hosts Lowellville on Monday.
