‘Eye of the Tiger’ 15-bout card set for Saturday
YOUNGSTOWN — A 15-bout, all-amateur fight card is set for Saturday at the Collingwood Center, formerly St. Joseph the Provider Church, in Campbell.
Presented by Lights Out Management and Springfield High School baseball, in conjunction with Golden String Boxing, their ‘Eye of the Tiger Boxing” event will feature up and coming boxers representing four area gyms including Golden String Boxing Club, South Side Boxing Club, Burnside A.C and New Castle’s Foundation Boxing Club.
The main event will pit Darius Harshaw, of Youngstown’s Golden String Boxing, going up against Caleb Rivera, of New York, in a 160-pound pairing. Meanwhile, Austin Gibson, of Struthers Burnside Boxing Club, takes on Alan Williams, of New Castle’s Foundation Boxing Club, in the 140-pound co-main attraction.
“Our area gyms have many notable amateur fighters and those boxers will have the opportunity this weekend to show everyone in attendance why they should keep an eye on them in the future,” said Tom Cordell, Golden String trainer and local promoter. “We try to keep all bouts evenly matched, and this weekend’s show will most assuredly have highly-competitive bouts.”
Golden String Boxing Club, whose trainers include Sam Calderone and Cordell, have seven boxers on the slate while Jack Loew of South Side Boxing Club and Keith Burnside of Struthers’ Burnside Boxing Club are the two other local gyms sending their boxers to the event.
Foundation Boxing is represented with three boxers.
In addition to Harshaw, the other Golden String boxers include Omari Garner (115 pounds), Colton Elser (140 pounds), Antwan Miller (150 pounds), Yousef Hajjawi (160 pounds) and Christian Cabrera (115 pounds) with heavyweight Phil Albenze rounding out their local contingent.
Garner will meet Zavier Campbell, of Pittsburgh; Elser goes up against Owen Tahmalwash, of Mansfield; Miller is set to take on Canton’s Charlie Williams; Hajjawi will entertain Sam Stefano, of Cleveland; Cabrera hosts Cru Aronhalt, of Canton; with Albenze ready for Ed Boehler, of Pittsburgh.
Dontrail Burks, who is trained by Loew, will take on Isaiah Jones, of Akron, in a 140-pound scrap while the other two entries representing Foundation Boxing include Will Perez, who goes up against Akron’s Jonah Hoffman in a 140-pound pairing and Jose Perez, who takes on Kevin Gulling, of Canton, in a 130-pound match-up.
An all-Mansfield pairing pits Allen Lewis against Shaleek Cook at 150 pounds.
“Lights Out Management is pleased to be aligned with Golden String Boxing, Springfield Local High School, all local gyms and area fans because without any of them, none of this would be possible,” Lights Out Management’s Mike Cefalde said.
The show will honor the 1993 Campbell Memorial Red Devils’ state championship basketball team, coached by Brian Danilov, and the only time in program history that the school has played for a state title.
General Admission is $20, $30 for VIP chairs with tables of eight available for $400.
Doors open at 6 p.m., with the first fight set to hit the bell at 7 p.m.
