Gibson defeats James on ‘Fight Night 5’ card

STRUTHERS — When asked about his boxing career, Austin Gibson says he is simply an ordinary 26-year-old guy, who has a 9-to-5 job and just happens to like to box in his spare time.

Yet, he was anything but ordinary before 1,000 screaming fans during the main event of Paolone-N-Burnside’s “Fight Night 5” amateur fight card at historic Struthers Field House on Saturday evening.

With arms flailing and punches simultaneously dodged all three rounds by both Gibson and his opponent, Tyler James of Cleveland, it was Gibson’s hand that was raised when he scored a unanimous decision after nine grueling minutes of non-stop punching.

The two boxers capped off the 10-bout card by going toe-to-toe with one another. Neither 147-pounder gave ground to the other, but in the end, the judges awarded Gibson the victory as he won his second straight fight and improved to 9-6 overall in 15 amateur pairings.

“I was in a slump, but my last two times out. I asked God to help me with my mindset. He always helps me get set and gives me much-needed inner peace,” Gibson said after the fight. “I landed my overhand early so I kept going with it. In the second round, Tyler caught on and I got a little tired.

“He is an amazing fighter, but in the third round I was able to get my second wind to finish. The crowd was amazing and I was personally inspired with over 20 family and friends in attendance.”

In the 165-pound co-main, 19-year-old Charles Murray of London, England’s Wolverhampton Boxing Club scored a unanimous decision over 24-year-old Caleb Rivera of New York City.

Crowd favorite Keith Burnside, who is trained by his father, improved to 12-3 after scoring a split decision over Deron Lucky of Cleveland at 147 pounds.

Burnside forced a standing eight-count of Lucky in the first round and at the end of the fight, drawing blood above his upper lip in the second round.

“I lost my last fight, had an off-night and didn’t feel like myself, so my motto tonight was to get back into the ring, work hard and bounce back,” Burnside said. “That loss made me a lot hungrier tonight. I used my jab then went to the body when I needed to.”

Juan Jauregui, who is trained by former middleweight world champion Kelly Pavlik, scored a unanimous decision over Connor Bollinger of Pittsburgh after forcing two standing eight-counts in their 128-pound slugfest.

With the win, Jauregui moved to 2-0 against his Keystone State opponent.

“Kelly told me to stay focused, use my speed and box,” Jauregui said. “He didn’t want me to fight wild and just kept telling me to box clean and sharp. I got a little winded at the end of the second round, but I was able to catch my breath and finish strong.”

Dontrail Burkes of Jack Loew’s South Side Boxing Club scored a split-decision victory over Javian Adamas of Springfield, Massachusetts in a 115-pound scrap, while Juan Adamas, Jr. also won by split decision over Akron’s Jonah Hoffman in a 135-pound pairing.

Charles Murray’s twin brother, Henry, defeated Drew Mercer of Alliance when the referee stopped their 160-pound bout at two minutes and 33 seconds into the second round, while Tyrin Jones of Akron was a unanimous winner over Carter Bollinger of Pittsburgh in a 128-pound match-up.

Ashtabula’s Nikko Jackson scored a split decision victory over Aiden St. Clair of Burnside A.C. in the night’s opening fight at 180 pounds, while Juqan Buckner of Cleveland’s Quality Work Boxing won his second amateur bout when he scored a unanimous decision over Malik Mitchell of Canton at 189 pounds. The only two fights the two boxers have had have been against one another.
