BOYS BASKETBALL

Lakeview 61, Niles 48 — Lakeview built an early lead in the first half, then pulled away in the second half for a 61-48 victory over Niles on Saturday. Isaiah Lantz led a balanced scoring effort from the Bulldogs with 16 points, while Carter Doran added 14 points. Leo Parise also had 11 points, as Trace Goyzueta had 10. True Carey-Hardin led the Red Dragons with 16 points, while Avon Fryer had 14 and Cash Carey-Hardin had 10.

Mineral Ridge 64, Orange 62 — The Rams won their fourth game in a row with a 64-62 victory over the Lions on Saturday. Mineral Ridge opened the game with a big first quarter, then held on late to withstand an Orange rally. Chase Moore scored 21 points to lead the Rams, while Kaden Shaffer added 20 points. Derrick Hester also had 10 points for Mineral Ridge.

Jackson-Milton 62, Chalker 36 — After starting the season 2-7, Jackson-Milton won its seventh game of its last nine with a 62-36 victory over Chalker on Saturday. Ryen Romigh continued his high-scoring senior campaign with 28 points, while James Croyle had 15 points for the Blue Jays. Chase Learn led the Wildcats with 12 points, while Daniel Kellar added 8.

Poland 51, Hubbard 39 — in a key Northeast-8 Conference contest, Poland finished strong for a 51-39 win over Hubbard on Saturday. Carmine Tukalo led the Bulldogs with 17 points, as three others finished with 8 points apiece. Jakob Hayes had a game-high 19 points for the Eagles.

Salem 67, Beaver Local 64 — After a low-scoring first half, both teams exploded in the second half, as Salem upset Beaver Local 67-64 on Saturday. Colin Riesen had 19 points for the Quakers to go with 17 points from Ben Severe and 13 from Deontay Steele. Luke Rettos had a team-high 21 points for Beavers, while Owen Hill added 20 points.

East Liverpool 60, Cardinal Mooney 44 — The Cardinals’ nine three-pointers weren’t enough on Saturday, as they fell 60-44 to East Liverpool. Dante Turner hit four of those threes to finish with 14 points, while Grayson Dubos added 13 for Cardinal Mooney. Nate Birch scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Potters.

Champion 60, Brookfield 57 — In a hot shooting game for both teams, Champion held on to edge Brookfield 60-57 on Saturday. Christian Williams finished with 20 points to lead the Golden Flashes, while Mike Miller had 13 and Braylen Braham and Damien Wickham each tallied 12. Blake Hammond led the Warriors with 23 points. Teagan Barbe also had 10 for Brookfield.

Southern 58, East Palestine 46 — Southern dominated the third quarter to pull out a 58-46 win over East Palestine on Saturday. Braxton Sloan scored 22 points to pace the Indians, while Aaron Keoppel had 14. For the Bulldogs, Owen Jurjavcic finished with 13 points, as Drew Bycroft had 12 points and Kyler Bourne had 11.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Canfield 35, West Branch 31 — Canfield continued its torrid start to the season by holding off West Branch 35-31 on Saturday to improve to 19-1 in a battle between two of the area’s top teams. The Cardinals had three players finish in double figures, led by Sofia Castronova with 11 points. Jenna Triveri and Marina Koenig each also added 10 points. Mati Hawk and Audrey Eaton paced the Warriors with 8 points apiece.

Girard 42, South Range 33 — A balanced team scoring effort helped lead Girard to a 42-33 victory over South Range on Saturday. Aly Gassman scored 11 points for the Indians, while Caylee Wilkes had 9 points and Makenzee White had 7 points. Gwen Lowry had a game-high 16 points to lead the Raiders.

Boardman 54, Warren G. Harding 44 — On Senior Day, the Spartans secured a 54-44 victory over conference rival Warren G. Harding. Mikayla Rivera led the way for Boardman with 15 points, while Jocelynn Torres scored 14 and Sarah Bero added 13. No stats for the Raiders were submitted.

Howland 42, Austintown Fitch 39 — Howland took control in the fourth quarter and pulled ahead on Saturday for a 42-39 victory over AAC foe Austintown Fitch. Mia Thomas finished with a game-high 24 points, while Maya Kubancsek finished with 10 points for the Tigers. Samantha Severn paced things for the Falcons with 15 points, while Rachel Spalding had 11 points.

Lakeview 52, Poland 24 — A fast start for Lakeview helped the Bulldogs dominate Northeast-8 rival Poland 52-24 on Saturday. Sophie Irwin knocked down three triples for Lakeview en route to scoring 12 points, while Annabelle Humphrey and Sienna Terry each scored 9 points. Kate Harrell had 8 points for Poland and Cassie Blanch added 7 points.

Rootstown 67, Warren JFK 47 — The two top teams in the Portage Trail Conference battled it out on Saturday, with Rootstown pulling out a 67-47 win over Warren JFK. The Eagles were without leading scorer Didi Ryan, but Gianna Pompelia finished with 16 points to lead JFK, while Addy Odille added 12 points. Colbie Curall scored 17 points to lead the Rovers, while Nadia Hough had 15.

Newton Falls 38, Ravenna 33 — Behind a 15-point performance from Lilly Sait, Newton Falls held off Ravenna 38-33 on Saturday. Kennedy Howard also scored 9 points for the Tigers, while Madison Davis added 8 points.

Salem 44, Woodridge 30 — Salem rode its stout defense to a 44-30 win over Woodridge on Saturday. Reese and Rylee Davidson-Chuck combined for 26 points to lead the Quakers, while Allie Martin had 12 points to lead Woodridge.

Western Reserve 71, East Palestine 21 — Western Reserve overpowered East Palestine for a 71-21 victory over the Bulldogs on Saturday. The Blue Devils knocked down 10 threes, as Kylee Ramsey led the way with 17 points. Quincy Miller also had 15 points, while Isabella Mauro had 12 points for Western Reserve. Emma Gingher finished with 6 points to lead East Palestine.

BOYS WRESTLING

Howland earned a pair of dual-match victories on Saturday, defeating West Branch 45-36 and Boardman 46-30. Against the Warriors, Brayden Cortese (106), Aidan O’Donnell (132) and Deacon Mock (144) each won by technical fall, while Patrick Neff (126), Eddie Morrison (138),Cohen Rudesill (150), Christopher Mijavec (190) and Noah Swope (285) each secured falls.

Then against the Spartans, the Tigers got technical falls from O’Donnell, major decisions by Neff and Calvin Croff (175), and falls from Morrison (138), Mock (144), Aidan Whittenberger (165) and Mjiavec (190).

O’Donnell earned his 100th career victory during the dual matches, becoming the 23rd wrestler in school history to reach the milestone. The Tigers junior now has a career record of 100-29.
