High School Sports Roundup from Feb. 22

SWIMMING & DIVING

Over the weekend, the swimming and diving season come to a close.

For the D-II boys, Ursuline was 30th with 26 points, Canfield was 32nd with 20, Columbina posted 17 points for 39th and Poland came in 45th with 10.

Columbiana’s Preston Buckingham was the lone Clipper. He was fifth in the 100 breaststroke with 57.83, and he took 14th in the boys 200 IM with 1:59.80.

Canfield was 16th with a time of 1:40.54 after the performance from Hayden Price, Ryan Weibling, Anthony Zoccali and AJ Helmick in the 200 medley relay.

Price also took seventh in the 100 backstroke with a time of 51.17 and added an 11th-place finish in the 200 IM with a 1:57.56.

The Ursuline boys 200 freestyle relay was 10th after Michael Lattanzio, Logan Schmutz, John Rock and Andy Ward combined for a 1:29.59.

Ward also finished in a three-way tie for sixth in the 50 freestyle. He hit the wall at 21.47 seconds, the same time as Cincinnati Mariemont’s Quinn Heis and Gilmour Academy’s’ PJ Koerwitz.

Poland’s 200 freestyle squad of Sean Zura, Gabe Bettross, Jake O’Bruba and Ian Vandervort clocked 1:30.06 to finish 12th.

There were a pair of boys divers as well. Boardman’s RJ Keating finished 23rd with an attempt of 168.45 in the Division I finals. Canfield’s Karsten Miller was 32nd in the boys Division II competition with a 98.70.

Girls

The Boardman girls finished 16th with 35 points in Division I. Upper Arlington won in dominant fashion, amassing 263.5 points. Mason was the runner-up with 195.

Boardman’s team of Aly Murray, Petra Crnjak, Gina DiNapoli and Alex Taylor swam 1:47.39 for ninth in the 200 medley relay. Taylork Crnjak, DiNapoli joined Abigail Miholk in the 200 freestyle relay, where the Spartans finished 10th with a 1:38.54.

Taylor also finished 10th in the 100 freestyle by clocking a 52.60 second finish.

In Division II, Springfield girls (39 points) were 15th, Canfield (27) was 24th, Poland (6) was 46th and Howland (3) was 51st.

Canfield earned 10th in the 200 medley relay as the crew of Adele Colonna, Katie Weibling, Matea Ronyak and Lyla Gray swam 1:53.18.

Springfield took 11th in the 200 medley relay with a 1:53.28 from the team of Tres Hively, Paige McCombs, Kalli Pellice and Blythe Hively.

McCombs also recorded a 58.33 for 10th in the 100 butterfly, and she had a 13th-place time of 1:07.02 in the 100 backstroke. Meanwhile, Hively added a ninth-place finish with a 58.32 in the 100 backstroke and a 10th-place finish for the Tigers after posting 5:16.08 in the 500 freestyle.

As for the divers, Canfield’s Fallon Amedia claimed sixth place with a final score of 364.55 while competing in the Division II girls’ final. Poland’s Mckenna Daley took 11th with a 339.20, and Girard’s Addison Silverman 140.50 for 21st.

Howland saw Jules Dewberry advance to the 100 breaststroke finals, where she finished 14th with a 1:07.17.

Olmsted Falls 61, Austintown Fitch 43 — At Elyria Catholic, the Falcons came up short against the defending Division I champions. Stats were not provided.

Twinsburg 49, Warren G. Harding 43 — At Medina, the Raiders’ season came to an end after falling to Twinsburg. Stats were not provided.

Northeast 5

St. Vincent-St. Mary 61, Howland 30 — In Macedonia, the Tigers’ campaign concluded with a trip to the district final. St. Vincent-St. Mary was just too much for the Tigers, shutting them out in the first quarter 19-0. Maya Kubancsek led the Tigers with 12 points, and Sophia Powell tallied six points.

Northeast 2

Creston Norwayne 64, South Range 23 — The Raiders couldn’t keep up with Norwayne as their season came to an end. Stats were not reported.

Canton South 46, Crestview 42, OT — The Rebels came up just shy in the extra period. Stats were not reported.

Northeast 1

Rootstown 57, LaBrae 53 — At Girard, the Vikings put up a fight against the top seeded in the playoffs. Marissa Levensky (13 points) made a fast-break layup, and Makayla Scruggs nailed a pair from downtown. LaBrae went on a 22-4 run to close out the opening quarter, and the Vikings took a 23-14 lead into the second. Sophomore Riley Rowe used a great spin-move to score. Magoulick had a big time block on defense, but the score was tied 49-49 with 2 minutes left in regulation. Then, sophomore Elliot Smallfield (team-high 15 points) nailed one from downtown, and Rootstown didn’t relinquish the lead down the stretch.

DIVISION VII

Northeast 1

Warren JFK 60, Middlefield Cardinal 43 — Gianna Pompelia, who scored 43 points, eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for her career as the Eagles captured the program’s first district championship. She got the Eagles off to a fast start, scoring 24 points in the first half, as JFK took a 12-point lead over Cardinal into halftime. But the Eagles went cold in the third quarter, scoring just three points, as the Huskies cut the deficit all the way to seven heading into the final period. It wouldn’t last long though, as JFK opened the fourth quarter on a 12-2 run and Pompelia scored 17 of her points during the quarter to help the Eagles close things out.

Northeast 2

Mogadore 49, Maplewood 45 — Despite a terrific second-half effort, the Maplewood Rockets fell short. It was down to the wire, with each team throwing their best at each other, but the Wildcats were able to fend off Maplewood in the fourth quarter and stifle the comeback. Claire Urchek paced the Rockets with 15 points. Aliah Brumit added 11.

Northeast 1

Poland 69, St. Martin de Porres 51 — At Poland Field House, a 25-point second quarter helped the Bulldogs break the game open and take a 38-21 lead into the locker room. The lead was safe as the Lions were unable to threaten the rest of the way. Five Bulldogs reached double figures. Oliver McCully, Carmine Tukalo and Nick Nittoli each scored 11 points. Meanwhile, Michael Daley and Anthony Delluomo each scored 10. The Bulldogs will host Doylestown Chippawa on Wednesday in the district semifinal.

Garrettsville Garfield 57, Girard 53 — The G-Men will travel to Chagrin Falls for a district semifinal on Wednesday.

Pymatuning Valley 54, Lakeview 44 — The Lakers will travel to fourth-seeded Creston Norwayne for a district semifinal on Wednesday.

Mathews 59, Lowellville 41 — In Vienna, the Mustangs picked up a win as Dom Toto and Caden Brubaker each had 17-point performances. The Mustangs shut down the Rockets in the first and fourth quarter, as the visitors only scored a combined 10 points in the frames. Drew Modelski led the Rockets with 14 points. The Mustangs will host Western Reserve on Wednesday in a district semifinal.

Western Reserve 65, Windham 44 — The Blue Devils will travel to sixth-seeded Mathews on Wednesday for a district semifinal.

Northeast 2

Warren JFK 73, Middlefield Cardinal 7 — In Warren, the Eagles held Cardinal scoreless until the second quarter. By the start of the second, the Eagles had already taken a 29-0 lead. Nick Ryan led all scorers with 30 points, and Henry Phillips added 14. The No. 2 Eagles will host Badger in a district semifinal on Wednesday.

Badger 59, Maplewood 49 — Alton Winchek was a force for the Braves, scoring 20 points to lead all scorers. Tyler McWilliams scored 13 and Jack Harnett added eight. For the Rockets, David Kern scored 17 to lead the way. The Braves will travel to Warren to take on JFK in a district semifinal Wednesday night.

Bristol 76, Leetonia 39 — At Bristol, the Panthers took control early and led 41-19 by halftime. Kaiden Kohler led all scorers with 24 points for Bristol. Jack Berry chipped in 16 points, and Seth Miller had seven. Dylan Johns scored 12 points for the Bears, and Carson Brock added 11. The fifth-seeded Panthers will host Kidron Central Christian on Wednesday in the district semifinal.

Heartland Christian 62, Open Door Christian 52 — Heartland Christian will welcome Fairport Harding on Wednesday night for a district semifinal.

COMPETITIVE CHEERLEADING

The Austintown Fitch Cheerleading team repeated as state champions after winning the 2025 Ohio Association of Secondary School Administrators Division II Championship in the Traditional Building Category on Sunday. The Falcons won the title for the first time in school history in 2024 before successfully defending their championship in this year’s competition.
