SWIMMING
DIVISION II SECTIONAL
The Canfield girls relay teams were dominant on Friday.
Postseason swimming began as the Division II sectional was held in Akron, and the Cardinals picked up three wins in the relays.
Canfield’s foursome of Adele Colonna, Katie Weibling, Matea Ronyak and Lyla Gray swam 25.30 to win the girls’ 200-yard medley relay. Earlier, Josie Protain, Madelyn Gray, Lyla Gray and Ronyak won the 200 freestyle relay with a 1:43.95. And earlier, Carina Gamberale, Gianna Gamberale, Madelyn Gray and Protain combined to swim 3:52.68 for first in the 400 freestyle relay.
Springfield also had a couple sophomores earn some first-place finishes.
Tres Hively added a win in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:20.62. She added a win in the 100 backstroke (1:01.76). Paige McCombs registered a 59.10 in the girls 100 butterfly. McCombs clocked a 1:07.37 to take first in the 100 breaststroke.
On the boys’ side, Canfield senior Hayden Price won the 200 IM with a 2:01.53. He also won the 100 backstroke with a 52.76.
Poland’s Ian Vandervort took the 100 freestyle with a 48.82, and Salem’s Ryan Folger won the 100 butterfly with 53.87.
The area also had competitors swimming at the sectional at SPIRE, but no locals registered high finishes in their event.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Springfield 44, Waterloo 41 — The Tigers were able to stave off a late surge by the Vikings to claim the win. Carson Cunningham led the Springfield offense with 17 points and Isaac LaMorticella added 13 on four made triples. In the loss, Trevor Simons and Gage Hawley each recorded 12 points to lead Waterloo.
Harding 56, Cardinal Mooney 46 — The Raiders took a slim lead into halftime but dominated in the second half to claim the win over the Cardinals. Chaz Coleman’s 20 points lifted the Raiders to the win and Matt Richardson added 10 points for Harding. In the loss, Marvin Dubos tallied 14 points and Dom Letlow contributed 12 points for Mooney.
Campbell 70, Mineral Ridge 50 — The Red Devils snapped the Rams’ five-game win streak with a dominant win Friday night. Josue Rodriguez drilled four shots from three on his way to a game-high 30 points for Campbell while Jared Colon added 12 points and Teyon Harris collected 15 points to round out the Red Devils’ leading scorers. For Mineral Ridge, Chase Moore led the charge with 17 points and Jordan Moore added 11 in teh loss.
Garfield 91, Brookfield 68 — Preston Gedeon drilled eight three-pointers for the G-Men in the crushing win over the Warriors. Gedeon collected a game-high 40 points to lead Garfield, Cade Rock added 16 points and the tandem of Garet Warnick and Brandyn Bogucki each added 13 points to round out the Garfield leading scorers. Brookfield was led by Blake Hammond with 13 points in the loss.
Chalker 44, Bloomfield 29 — The Wildcats coasted to the win over the Cardinals thanks to jumping out to an early lead. Asher Wise led the way for Chalker with 11 points in the win. For Bloomfield, Holden and Colton each tallied 12 points to lead the Cardinals.
Ursuline 66, Howland 56 — The Fighting Irish maintained a slim lead heading into intermission but exploded in the second half to tame the Tigers Friday night. Noah Bell led the way for Ursuline with 19 points, Jace Riccardo added 15 and DaShaun Will contributed 11 points in the win. For Howland, Steven Bubon and Luca Fronzaglio each tallied 13 points to shoulder leading scorer duties in the loss and Darren Douglas chipped in 10 points.
Lisbon 67, Leetonia 39 — The Blue Devils breezed by the Bears thanks to a powerful offensive performance that lasted all four quarters. AJ Ramgeet claimed leading scorer status for Lisbon with 22 points, Blaine Barnes lent 19 points and Aidan Ramgeet collected 11 points. For Leetonia, Ralph Spotleson led with 11 points and Dylan Brown added 10 points in the loss.
South Range 69, Niles 64 — The Red Dragons gave the Raiders a run for their money in the second half but came up short Friday night as South Range claimed the win. Leading for the Raiders was Luke Rohan with 19 points, Nick Toy with 13, Tristan Toy added 12 and Graham Heikkinen contributed 11 points to round out the South Range leading scorers. In the loss, True Carey-Hardin led all scorers with 28 points for Niles, while Alex Doyle lent 11 and the duo of Izaiah Redd and Avon Fryer each added 10 points.
West Branch 51, Salem 36 — The Warriors picked up the win over the Quakers thanks to crucial second and third quarters. West Branch was led by Jeremiah Thomas with 15 points, Gavin Gregory with 11 points and Camden Lane with 10 points. In the loss, Salem was led by Deontay Steele who drilled four shots from deep on his way to a game-high 18 points.
Western Reserve 62, Sebring 31 — The Blue Devils jumped out to a dominant lead and kept it throughout the remainder of the game to dominate the Trojans. Leading the way for Western Reserve was Connor Cochran with 18 points behind five made three’s, Josh Klasic with 14 points and Nico Paris added 10. For Sebring, Tre Stevens led with 17 points in the loss.
Newton Falls 52, Champion 40 — The Tigers led from the first quarter onward to top the Golden Flashes by 12. Landon McGregor led all scorers with 24 points for Newton Falls in the win. For Champion. Mike Miller led with 13 points and Christian Williams chipped in 10 in the loss.
Kennedy 61, Lake Central Christian 55 — The Eagles trailed heading into the fourth quarter but posted 23 points in the final frame to tame the Tigers Friday night. Nick Ryan’s 18 points led the way for Kennedy, while Henry Phillips had 13, Christian Swogger lent 14 and Preston Geracitano chipped in 11 points to round out the Eagles’ leading scorers. In the loss, Jace Hulse led LCC with 16 points, Brody Zook added 10 and TJ Lynch contributed 11 points.
Lakeview 58, Struthers 48 — The Bulldogs claimed an early lead over the Wildcats and held on for the win Friday night. Leading the way for Lakeview was Leo Parise with 17 points behind a trio of triples, while Isaiah Lantz drilled four shots from beyond the arc on his way to 15 points to level the Lakeview leading scorers. In the loss, Tommy Cole led Struthers with a game-high 21 points behind three three-pointers and Ty Cole added 10 points.
Mathews 60, Badger 49 — Jake Petak drilled eight three pointers Friday night to lead the Mustangs to the win over the Braves. Petak tallied 30 points while Anthony Marinkovich lent 14 for the victors. In the loss, Badger was led by Tyler McWilliams with 13 points, Alton Winchek added 11 and Jack Harnett chipped in 10.
Bristol 79, Lordstown 22 — The Panthers came out of the gates swinging with a 21-point first quarter and kept their foot on the gas to dominate the Red Devils. Bristol’s Kaiden Kohler led the offensive attack with 22 points while Croc Thorp was right behind with 19. In the loss, Seth Chambers led Lordstown with six points.
Grand Valley 65, Maplewood 38 — The Mustangs picked up their fourth straight win Friday night after topping the Rockets. Leading the way offensively for Grand Valley was Solly Schultz who pulled in a game-high 21 points, Braden Hart with 15 points and Carter Turk with 14. In the loss, David Kern paced Maplewood with nine points.

Windham 29, St. John 27 — The Bombers held off a late offensive attack from the Fighting Heralds to snap a seven-game skid. Leading the way for Windham was Makenzi Blockinger with eight points. In the loss, Alexa Jordan led all scorers with 13 points for St. John.
