OHSAA finalizes boys hoops playoff bracket
The end of the boys basketball season is right around the corner. And on Sunday, teams found out where their playoff journeys will begin.
The OHSAA released the boys basketball playoff brackets, which feature seven divisions for the first time in state history.
A couple teams will have to wait to play in Division II.
Warren Harding got a bye in the three-team Northeast 1 bracket and will play in the district championship on March 1 at Elyria Catholic. The Raiders await the winner of North Olmstead and Hudson. Meanwhile, Austintown Fitch also received a bye and will playthe winner of Broadview Heights and Valley Forge in the district title.
In the Northeast 6 bracket, Boardman will host Avon on Feb. 25 in a district semifinal.
As for Division III, East will travel to Madison as part of the Northeast 1 slate on Feb. 22. Rival Chaney is in the Northeast 3 bracket, where the Cowboys will host Chardon on Feb. 18 for a sectional semifinal.
In Northeast 4, Howland will make the trip to Barberton on Feb. 18 section semi.
On to Division IV, and the top-seed Canfield Cardinals, who will host Ravenna on Feb. 21. Also that day, Salem will go to Clearview, and West Branch visits Lake Catholic.
Then there’s Northeast 3, where Hubbard and Niles will compete on Feb. 21. The Eagles will travel to Orrville, and the Red Dragons will drive to Jefferson.
Northeast 5 has a rare matchup between two local teams. On Feb. 21, the Struthers Wildcats will make the drive to Youngstown to take on Ursuline
There’s a couple more local-local meetings in Division V, Northeast 4, as Lakeview travels to Pymatuning Valley on Feb. 22 and Crestview makes the short drive to South Range that day. Additionally, Cardinal Mooney will travel to eight-seeded Crestwood.
Champion has a Northeast 1 sectional semifinal on Feb. 19 when the Golden Flashes host Berkshire. On Feb. 22 in the same bracket, Poland will host St. Martin De Porres in a sectional final.
Northeast 3 will feature a meeting between Garfield and Girard in Garrettsville on Feb. 22. And Northeast 2 will see Liberty travel to Fairview that day.
In Division VI, Columbiana got the No. 2 seed in Northeast 4 and received a bye. On Feb. 25, the Clippers will play either Campbell or Southern, who play in Campbell for a sectional semifinal on Feb. 21. Also in Feb. 21 sectional semis is Mineral Ridge traveling to LaBrae, and Springfield hosting Valley Christian.
Grand Valley is the three seed in the Northeast 3 bracket, and the Mustangs will host United on Feb. 21. On the opposite side of the bracket, East Palestine travels to Newton Falls.
Brookfield is the lone local team in Northeast 1. The Warriors will host East Canton on Feb. 21. And McDonald is the only area team in Northeast 2. The Blue Devils will host Mapleton that evening.
There are a few teams featured in Division VII, Northeast 3.
Lordstown will have to make a trip to third-seeded Hillsdale on Feb. 22. That same day, Jackson-Milton will have to travel to Ashtabula to face St. John, and Heartland Christian will host Open Door Christian.
Sebring is the 25th seed and got a bye. The Trojans will face top-seeded Cornerstone Christian or Waterloo in a Northeast 1 sectional final on Feb. 22. Also on Feb. 22, Chalker will travel to Wellsville, Mathews will host Lowellville and Windham will travel to Berlin Center to face Western Reserve.
The Northeast 2 bracket is nearly all local as well. Warren JFK got a second seed and will host Cardinal on Feb. 22. That day, Maplewood will host Badger, and Leetonia will travel to Bristol.
