BOARDMAN — Campbell Memorial opened the softball season with a dominant win over Lordstown at the Fields of Dreams in Boardman on Monday.

After surrendering two runs in the top of the first inning, Campbell scored 12 unanswered in less than five innings to earn a 12-2 win to start the season.

“Not too bad, with the weather being a little cold and [it being the] first game this season,” Campbell coach Paul Kish said of his team’s performance.

Following a leadoff strikeout, Lordstown’s Emma DeWeese and Navawna King each singled before Alana Forester drove both in on a single to right field. The hit gave Lordstown an early 2-0 lead.

“I think offense will definitely be a strength,” Lordstown head coach Casee Schnars said. “I think we have a lot of good hitters. [We were] definitely making good, solid contact, and I hope to see more contact as we move through the season.”

Campbell quickly and swiftly responded in the bottom of the first inning.

Lordstown starting pitcher Leah Smith walked the leadoff batter and hit the next two with pitches, which led Schnars, a first-year coach, to make a change in the circle. Forester replaced Smith but was unable to keep Campbell off of the scoreboard.

On a wild pitch, Campbell scored two runs to tie the game. Emily Cleland then doubled, driving in a run to give Campbell a 3-2 lead. Campbell added to its advantage when two runners were aggressive on the basepaths and scored after a Liv Miranda groundout.

After drawing a pair of walks, Campbell scored its sixth and final run of the first inning on a Mileesa Williams single.

Lordstown failed to cut into the deficit in the second inning despite Ariana Berry singling to center and Abigail Morrison doubling to deep left-center field to put two runners in scoring position.

Following a scoreless bottom of the second and top of the third, Campbell grew its lead to seven behind a Savannah Cleland two-run single and more aggressive baserunning on a dropped third strike.

In the fourth, Abby Broz drove in a pair of runs on a single to centerfield before Emily Cleland hit an infield single to score Broz.

Bella Ornelas, who relieved starting pitcher Ramani Adams to start the fourth inning, closed the game out by retiring the side in order, invoking the mercy rule.

Although a loss is never good, Schnars said she saw positive signs from her team.

“I definitely think we have a lot of potential,” Schnars said. “We’re still young. We only have one senior, so I think we have some things to learn, but I think we can grow as a team and overall, make a big impact this year.”

Like Schnars, Kish used Monday’s game to get a look at as many of his players as possible in a live game.

“We still have like five kids from last year, and we’re still trying to find the pieces at the bottom [of the order],” Kish said. “They all got an at-bat, and it’s still pretty even. So we’re just looking for those last three hitters and we’ll have extra off the bench. So it’s a good problem to have that they’re all pretty good, but we’re just deciding who’s gonna not be so nervous in the game because they’re young or haven’t played before.”

Campbell is scheduled to travel to Warren G. Harding today for a 5 p.m. game, while Lordstown is set for a home game vs. Chalker next Monday.

Starting at $2.99/week.
