CANTON — There just weren’t a lot of things that went right for the Campbell boys basketball team on Tuesday.
Errors throughout doomed the Red Devils, and Dalton won 62-40 in a Division VI regional semifinal at Canton Memorial Fieldhouse.
“(Dalton), credit to them. It felt like every turnover we had turned into two points for them,” Campbell head coach Nick Canterino said.
Transition defense, rebounding and turnovers were problems for the Red Devils. They managed to overcome those issues in the first quarter and only trailed 13-12 by the end of the period.
But the mistakes finally came back to bite Campbell (21-5) in the second quarter. Some missed layups allowed the Bulldogs to get out in transition, and the long passes up the court resulted in easy buckets on the other end.
Mix in some good passing around the lane and picks to set up shots, and the Bulldogs (16-10) blew the game open, leading 37-25 going into halftime.
“The end of that second quarter, the last three-and-a-half minutes, we just couldn’t get them out of the paint, blowing by us, couldn’t rebound. And all of a sudden, we kept turning the ball over, and those things will just doom ya,” Canterino said. “That’s when they went on their run.”
Much like the first quarter, the errors didn’t stop the Red Devils. But they couldn’t make a dent in the deficit. They traded baskets with the Bulldogs and trailed 45-33 at the end of the third.
The Bulldogs capitalized on Campbell’s mistakes and put the game away early in the fourth quarter. With a couple of minutes left, both coaches decided to pull their starters.
Jared Colon was Campbell’s lone double-digit scorer with 16 points. Josue Rodriguez scored 9, and Teyon Harris and Demetrius Lambert added 5 points each.
Campbell will have to say goodbye to seven seniors. The 2025 class consisted of Donovan Whetzel, Christos Davis, Mihali Koulias, Jake Tovarnak, Colon, Rodriguez and Harris.
“It’s special,” Canterino said. “There’s not that many area teams left. To be able to prove people wrong for the last three years is awesome. It’s something they’ll be able to look back on in the future and be really proud of themselves.”
It was another good year for the Red Devils. They won 21 games, claimed the conference crown and captured a district championship.
The senior class was only a group of freshmen when Campbell went on its run a few years ago, and the upperclassmen wanted to make a name for themselves in 2025.
They accomplished that with a memorable season of their own.
“Looking back … winning, accomplishing what we wanted to accomplish and having fun,” Colon said of the 2025 season.
