BASEBALL
Springfield 8, Champion 1 — The Tigers opened the season with a road victory over the Flashes thanks to a late flurry of runs over the final three innings. Noah Troggio earned the win for Springfield, as Troggio, Jackson Ensley, Alec Fusco and Payton Novak combined to only allow three hits, while striking out eight batters. Ensley led the team at the plate with three hits and two RBIs, while Fusco had two hits and three RBIs and Cooper Ensley had two hits. No Champion stats were submitted.
Jackson-Milton 7, Crestview 5 — The Blue Jays started fast and held off a late Rebels rally to pull out a 7-5 victory on Saturday. J-M racked up nine hits, led by two apiece from Dom Krol, Jaidyn Henry and Landon Workman with two hits apiece. Krol also had two RBIs, while Henry knocked a double. Crestview’s lone hits came from Wyatt Ervin, Braidy Willis and Brayden Devine. James Croyle got the start on the mound for the Blue Jays, going 4.2 innings and giving up one earned run, while striking out nine.
Canfield 6, Massillon Washington 1 — The Cardinals got off to a quick start with five runs over the first two innings and kept the Tigers at bay the rest of the way on Saturday. Zain Jadallah paced Canfield with three hits, which included a pair of doubles. Dylan Mancini belted a two-run homer, while Anthony Groner also had two RBIs. Groner picked up the win on the mound, pitching six innings, while only giving up one earned run and striking out five. W. Hymes and B. Polili each had the only hits for Massillon.
Warren JFK 3, Salem 0 — Freddy Bolchalk pitched a complete-game shutout for the Eagles in their victory over the Quakers. JFK had seven hits, led by Mike Bartoe with two, which included a triple and an RBI. Five other players had singles for the Eagles. Colin Riesen was credited with the loss for Salem, as three players had a hit for the Quakers.
Southeast 7, Mathews 3 — Southeast limited the Mustangs to three hits, as Joe Sharish did a little bit of everything for the Pirates. As the winning pitcher, Sharish threw two strikeouts and two walks, while belting a two-run double and a grand slam to score six runs for Southeast. Pat Mrofchak took the loss on the mound with two strikeouts and three walks.
Toronto 10, Mineral Ridge 0 — State-ranked Toronto proved to be too much for the Rams on Saturday. Xavier Klamer and Nick Anderson each had a hit in the first inning for Mineral Ridge, but that was all the Rams could muster the rest of the way. Nick Anderson and Gavin Harding combined on the mound for Mineral Ridge in the losing effort. No Toronto stats were submitted.
West Branch 2, Girard 1 — The defending state champions opened their season with a tight win over the Indians on Saturday. Jeremiah Thomas led the Warriors with two hits. Scofinsky and Anthony Perry each hit doubles, while Boston Mulinix had a triple. Jaden Royal and Zach Ward each had a pair of hits, which included a double for Royal. Perry got the win for West Branch, striking out five while giving up zero earned runs in six innings of work. Camron Herrick was credited with the loss with two earned runs and seven strikeouts in six innings.
Cardinal Mooney 9, Wooster Triway 3 — The Cardinals produced a steady dose of offense throughout the game for a comfortable victory over Triway on Saturday. Kaden Reese had four RBIs off three hits for Mooney, including a home run, while Ford Stacy had a pair of hits as well. Taco Verroco also belted a two-run homer for the Cardinals. Ben Oddis went five scoreless innings with four strikeouts and a walk. G. Schag knocked in a pair of runs off two hits for Triway.
Norwayne 7, Cardinal Mooney 3 — The Bobcats racked up 10 hits in their victory over the Cardinals on Saturday. D. Tanner, G. Cotton and L. Hackworth each put up two hits, as Hackworth and Tanner each belted a double. A. Snyder, D. Steinglass and Tanner combined on the mound to give up two earned runs while striking out two. Kaden Reese paced the offense for Mooney with two RBIs off a pair of hits. Ford Stacy, Vince Gentile and Jacob Gugliotta gave up four runs while striking out five on the mound.
Lakeview 12, Ursuline 3 — The Bulldogs got the bats going in the fourth inning, putting up 10 runs in the frame in a victory against the Fighting Irish. Six different players each had a pair of hits for Lakeview, as Jacob Shaker led the way with a home run and three RBIs. Carter Doran, Eli Gough and Jozef Kuchcinski each knocked in a pair of runs, as Shaker got the win on the mound with three earned runs and four strikeouts. CJ Snyder scored two runs off a single hit for Ursuline, as Thomas Kosovan took the loss on the mound by giving up 10 earned runs with two strikeouts.
Maplewood 2, Grand Valley 1 — The Rockets survived a close, low-scoring contest against the Mustangs on Saturday. Tyson Webster and Zach Suba each put up two hits for Maplewood, while Payton Plizga and Blake Taylor had a hit apiece for Grand Valley. Coleton Logan earned the win for the Rockets, twirling a six-inning gem with 15 strikeouts and just two walks. Plizga had two strikeouts in six innings for Grand Valley.
Warren G. Harding 9, Ashtabula Lakeside 1 — The Raiders capitalized on seven errors by the Dragons in a 9-1 victory. Elias Johnson was the lone player with two hits for either team, as he also belted a double. Bryttain Fuller earned the win on the mound for Harding, throwing four strikeouts with three walks. G. Tome threw three strikeouts and two walks in the losing effort for Lakeside.
Lowellville 24, Youngstown East 7 — It was a hit parade on Saturday for the Rockets, who racked up 14 hits in a big win over East to open the season. Liam Bartlett and Braylon Bolger each had three hits, while Bartlett added five RBIs. Geno Perry, Kasen Smith and Tyler Tuscano each also had two hits, which included a triple for Perry. Bartlett was credited with the win with three strikeouts and one earned run in two innings of work. Victor Rodriguez had a hit and two RBIs to lead the Golden Bears, as Isaiah Williams had the loss on the mound with eight earned runs given up and one strikeout with four walks.
Garfield 9, Bristol 2 — A late barrage of offense carried Garfield to a seven-run victory over Bristol on Saturday. Hill led the way for the G-Men with three hits and three RBIs, while Bogucki had a pair of hits. Five players had hits for Bristol, including a double by Croc Thorp. Warnick and Cardinal combined for six strikeouts and two earned runs given up on the mound for the G-Men, as Kaiden Kohler went four innings with two strikeouts and six walks for the Panthers.
SOFTBALL
Champion 10, Massillon Perry 0, 5 inn. — The Golden Flashes racked up 12 hits as they dominated Massillon Perry over five innings on Saturday for their second win of the season. Jonna Strock led the attack for Champion with three hits and three RBIs, including a home run. Gabby Gradishar and Josie Perhach each had two hits, as Gradishar picked up the win in the circle throwing seven strikeouts. Taylor Rouan also had a triple. No stats for Massillon Perry were submitted.
Avonworth (Pa.) 9, Columbiana 5 — After being tied through four innings, Avonworth scored four unanswered runs over the final three innings to hand the Clippers a 9-5 defeat on Saturday. Caitlynn Pleska was 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs, while Ella Dota had a double for Columbiana. Addison Brode, who was credited with the loss, gave up nine earned runs while striking out four over seven complete innings. S. Savatt was 3-for-4 with a triple, while L. Savatt, J. Jones, A. Eberhart, A. Brooks and I. Zmurka each had two hits for Avonworth, as Eberhart had a home run.
Steubenville 11, Poland 10, Game 1 — Despite getting outhit and the Bulldogs jumping out to a big lead, Steubenville rallied over the final three innings for an 11-10 win on Saturday. Elliana Thompson, Leanna Boccieri and Cassie Blanch led Poland’s offense with three hits apiece. Thompson homered and hit two doubles, while Boccieri smacked two doubles driving in three runs. Avery Jakubovic, Lily McDonald, and Kylie Hudran each had 2 hits. McDonald took the loss in the circle with three strikeouts. Gena Smith smacked a double to right center to score two runs for Steubenville and hand Poland the loss.
Poland 12, Brooke (W.Va.) 1, Game 2 — The Bulldogs continued their offensive barrage in their second game, finishing with 17 hits in a six-inning win over Brooke. Elliana Thompson kept up the offense with three hits and four RBIs, including a double and triple, while six other players each had two hits. Lily McDonald finished with three RBIs and a double. Leanna Boccieri had a pair of doubles and Avery Jakubovic had a triple.
Sharon (Pa.) 10, Hubbard 0, 5 inn., Game 1 — Sharon proved to be too much for the Eagles on Saturday, as Madelyn Vogan was dominant in the circle for the Tigers, twirling a five-inning no-hitter with 15 strikeouts. Brooklyn Ruzich had a pair of hits and two RBis for Sharon, while Vogan also belted a solo homer. Alauna Wilson and Marley Bundrant both had a double for the Tigers.
Hubbard 5, Sharon (Pa.) 4, Game 2 — The Eagles bounced back in a big way in the second game of the doubleheader, getting off to a hot start in a 5-4 win. Haleigh Taylor struck a two-run double to lead Hubbard, while Lauren Komorek and Layla Songer each also had doubles. Kaylee Shultz went the distance in the circle to get the win for Hubbard, giving up four earned runs and striking out one. Marley Bundrant had a triple and double for the Tigers, while Chloe Pagliarini had two RBIs.
West Branch 5, Girard 3 — All the game’s scoring came in the fifth inning as the Warriors defeated the Indians on Saturday. Klary McKay and Zoe Metzger both had a pair of hits for West Branch, as Metzger, Ellie Tucker and Addi Craven each belted doubles. Ellie Tucker and McKay combined to give up three earned runs while striking out nine for the Warriors. Gianna Saxon had two RBIs for Girard, as Caylee Wilkes hit a double and Riley Collins blasted a home run.
South Range 17, Struthers 0, 5 inn., Game 1 — The Raiders showcased their firepower with 10 hits to score 17 runs in a victory over the Wildcats. Anna Aey had two hits, including a triple, for five RBIs, while Jayli Wilt had three RBIs off three hits. Sophia Brogan and Gabby Spooner each had two hits and two RBIs. Solena DeJesus had 13 strikeouts for South Range.
South Range 18, Struthers 3, 5 inn., Game 2 — South Range continued its scoring barrage in the second game of the doubleheader. Sophia Brogan dominated the attack and with three hits for five RBIs. Keira Winner belted a three-run homer, as Brogan, Anna Aey and Giada Pauline each had triples. Jayli Wilt and Sophia Brogan combined for 10 strikeouts in the circle. Riley Guy, Vivian Marker and Giavanna Smiley each had RBIs for the Wildcats.
Maplewood 6, Grand Valley 1 — Maplewood scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning of a win over the Mustangs, as Addison Marker had a dominant outing in the circle for the Rockets, twirling a complete-game one-hitter with a whopping 19 strikeouts. Lauren Kreig and Katie Wear each had RBI doubles for Maplewood. Kaityin Baumann had the lone hit and RBI for Grand Valley.
BOYS LACROSSE
Boardman 15, Southeast 3 — Boardman won its third straight game with a dominant effort against the Pirates. Ashton Hoover paced the Spartans scoring barrage with five goals, while Luke DeJoseph and Kevin Montgomery each had a hat trick. Montgomery also added six assists, as Emerson Hare scored twice and Bryan Shaw and Chase Zelesnak each found the net. Hunter Richards and Brennan Whitman minded the net in each half for Boardman.

Howland took fourth at the Akron Firestone tournament on Saturday with a 2-0 win over Green (25-12, 25-12), a 2-0 loss to Villa Angela-St. Joseph (19-25, 12-25) and a 2-1 loss to Berkshire (14-25, 25-21, 20-25). Against Green, Wesley Fee had five kills, four aces and a block, while Carter Jones had four kills and four digs and Freddie Rivera had three digs and nine points. Against VASJ, Jones had three kills and four digs, Dylan Nguyen had three assists, six points and three aces and Rivera had five digs. Finally, against Berkshire, Fee had nine kills and two blocks, as Nick Caesar had four kills and Alex Slater had nine assists, while Jones had 12 digs and Rivera had nine digs.
