BASEBALL
Archbishop Hoban 7, Ursuline 2 — The 1-1 deadlock was broken after the Knights scored three in the fourth inning to take the lead and eventually take the game over the Fighting Irish. Zakary Zellers picked up the win on the mound, striking out six while giving up one walk and two hits. In the batter’s box, Blake Bantum singled twice and Justice Buckner doubled in the win. For Ursuline, Rowan Urbach was given the loss, throwing the whole game while striking out three, walking five and allowing seven hits. At the plate for the Fighting Irish, Luke Kollar singled twice and AJ Snyder doubled.
Marlington 6, South Range 2 — A late, five-run surge from the Dukes in the final innings was too much for the Raiders to overcome. Dylan Heatherington earned the win on the mound after throwing four innings in which he gave up five hits, one walk and struck out three. At the plate for Marlington, Garett Dillon doubled and drove in three runs. For South Range batters, Cleevely notched a pair of singles. Klasovsky was given the loss, allowing four walks and a hit in 1/3 innings.
East Palestine 15, Lowellville 3 (5 inn.) — The Bulldogs pummeled the Rockets thanks to eight runs in the top of the third inning and seven more to shut the door in the fifth. Cale Moraski recorded three singles and a pair of RBIs for East Palestine while Phoenix Marvin and Clark Rutledge each drove in a pair, Peyton Rutledge had a pair of singles and RBIs and Jaxson Robb added three RBIs. On the mound, Marvin picked up the win, throwing 4 1/3 innings while striking out six, walking three and allowing two hits. Kaden Primous doubled and singled while Geno Perry doubled for Lowellville in the loss. Braylon Bolger was given the loss after 2 1/3 innings, allowing four hits, five walks and striking out one.
Mathews 3, Fairport 1 — It was a pitcher’s duel Friday night as the Mustangs earned the close win over the Skippers, tossing a combined no-hitter. Caleb Nicula picked up the win for Mathews, striking out eight and walking two. At the plate for the Mustangs, Dom Toto doubled, tripled and singled while Gabe Pesa singled twice. Elijah Harless was given the loss, striking out five while giving up two walks.
Canfield 7, Cardinal Mooney 2 — In the battle of the Cardinals, Canfield’s five runs in the first two innings was the difference maker in the win over Mooney. Leading the Canfield offense was Anthony Groner with a pair of singles and RBIs, Zain Jadallah drove in two runs and Dylan Mancini and Jake Dovich each doubled. Groner also picked up the win, striking out eight while surrendering three walks and a hit in five innings of work. Will Petty was given the loss, throwing two innings while giving up five hits and walks while striking out none.
Maplewood 10, Badger 0 — The Rockets cruised to the win over the Braves thanks to a strong outing on the mound by Tyson Webster, who tossed six innings, giving up one walk and fanning seven. At the plate, Kenyan Clover and Tyson Webster each tallied two hits. Tyler McWilliams was given the loss, throwing five innings while giving up a pair of walks and striking out two.
Garfield 5, Southeast 1 (6 inn.) — Four runs in the fourth inning not only broke the 1-1 deadlock, but propelled the G-Men to the win over the Pirates. Warnick picked up the win for Garfield, striking out nine while allowing three hits and four walks. Miller was credited with the loss after 3 1/3 innings, striking out three while walking four and giving up one hit. Hill and Cardinal each singled for Garfield.
Niles 8, McDonald 3 — The Blue Devils knotted the contest in the top of the fifth inning, but the Red Devils answered back in a big way to claim the game. A host of Niles batters tallied a hit, but AJ Yost led the charge with a pair of doubles and singles, Brady Court and Anthony Mymo each drilled a pair of singles and Brian Parsons singled twice and drove in three runs. Connor Duncan picked up the win on the bump, tossing six innings while striking out one, allowing five hits and walking four. Brady Shobel dingled twice in the loss and Nick Larson was given the loss on the mound, allowing eight hits, one walk and striking out two in 4 2/3 innings.
Heartland Christian 14, Lisbon 2 — Christian Hamilton tossed a gem in the Lions’ throttling of the Blue Devils. Hamilton threw all seven innings, striking out three, walking three and surrendering four hits in the win. At the plate, the Lions were led by Jack Morgan with a double, two singles and three RBIs and Brady DeSantis with a pair of RBIs. Mason Jones was given the loss, allowing three hits and four walks while striking out seven in 2 2/3 innings. Ashton Hinchliffe singled twice for Lisbon.
Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin 9, Fitch 2 — A five-run fifth inning was more than enough for the Lions in the win over the Falcons. Leading the NDCL offensive attack was Lucas Marlowe and Frankie Clark with two singles each, Cian O’Boyle with a double, home run and four RBIs, Charlie O’Dale singled and doubled and Gavin Palchick tallied two RBIs. Aiden McCord picked up the win, striking out four while allowing two hits and walking none through 4 1/3 innings. In the loss, Carter Owens, Jackson Cheeks and Landyn Myers each singled twice and Mason Petridis doubled. Zac Zabosky was given the loss, striking out six, walking two and allowing five hits through 4 2/3 innings.
St. John 11, Bristol 1 (6 inn.) — The Fighting Heralds jumped ahead of the Panthers early and scored in nearly every inning to pick up the win. Ezra Campbell doubled, singled twice and drove in four runs and Ryan Williams doubled, singled twice and tallied three RBIs in the win. On the mound, Aaron Wychock threw five innings, striking out five, allowing two walks and surrendering one hit. Croc Thorp doubled in the loss. Kaiden Kohler threw five innings, striking out four while giving up four free passes and nine hits.
Warren JFK 10, Geneva 0 (5 inn.) — Kennedy’s offense was on fire, plating at least one run in all but one inning of the contest to topple Geneva. Carfangia doubled, singled and drove in two runs, Snyder doubled, singled twice and added two RBIs, Rinck singled twice and Ryan doubled at the plate for Kennedy. Bolchalk tossed a complete game one-hitter, striking out 10 while allowing no walks on the mound to earn the win. Besco was credited with the loss, throwing three innings while allowing six hits, three walks and striking out three.
SOFTBALL
LaBrae 8, McDonald 6 — The Vikings staved off a late-inning Blue Devil push to claim the Friday contest. Leah DeArmitt picked up the win, throwing five innings while striking out eight and walking none. At the plate for LaBrae, Riley Rowe belted a home run, doubled, singled and drove in three runs, Vada Allen doubled, Makenzie Lichty tripled, DeArmitt singled twice and Morgan Thompson doubled twice and drove in two runs. For McDonald, Gianna Mancini was given the loss after three innings in which she fanned five and walked none. At the plate for the Blue Devils, Aubrey Evans doubled and singled while Addison Grewell homered and drove in two runs.
Champion 13, Jefferson 0 (5 inn.) — Gabby Gradishar tossed a no-hitter in the Golden Flashes’ dismantling of the Falcons. Gradishar struck out 11 on the mound and helped her cause at the plate with a home run and three RBIs. Also adding to the offensive attack was Sam Strock with a pair of singles, Josie Perhach with a double and three RBIs and Jonna Strock with a grand slam and four RBIs. Ada Sirrine was given the loss, striking out three and walking three.
Chalker 3, Windham 0 (5 inn.) — In the first game of the doubleheader, the Wildcats plated a run in each of the first three innings and that was enough to top the Bombers. Alaynah Cox singled twice for Chalker at the plate. Tatum Hudak threw a no-hitter, striking out 12 batters while giving up one free pass. Lillian Pesa-Garrett was given the loss, throwing one inning while picking up one strikeout and giving up one hit.
Chalker 15, Windham 4 (5 inn.) — In game two of the doubleheader, the Wildcats jumped ahead early and poured it on to throttle the Bombers. Leading the Chalker 13-hit night was Kelsey Kren with a double, triple, two singles and three RBIs, Abby Grimm homered, singled twice and drove in four, Morgan Strock tripled and drove in three runs, Riley Ashcraft tallied a pair of RBIs and Bailey Ann Bussey tallied a pair of singles. Ashcraft picked up the win, fanning six, walking three and allowing two hits in three innings on the rubber. Skylar Bailey dingled twice and drove in a pair of RBIs and Makenna Jones doubled in the loss. Libby Inman was given the loss, throwing 3 1/3 innings while striking out three, walking three and giving up nine hits.
West Branch 2, South Range 0 — A pitcher’s duel in the circle led the low scoring affair with the Warriors topping the Raiders. Klary McKay picked up the win, tossing a complete game in which she gave up four hits, two walks and struck out two. Mati Hawk doubled for West Branch. Jayli Wilt was given the loss, throwing seven innings while giving up three hits, two walks and striking out eight.
Fitch 12, Ursuline 2 (6 inn.) — The Falcons broke out in the bottom of the second frame in the routing of the Fighting Irish. Tori Greathouse was credited with the win for Fitch in the circle. At the plate for the Falcons, Kaliana Ray doubled, singled, swiped two bags and drove in three runs, Alyssa Rodgers doubled, singled and stole two bases, Morgan Roby blasted a home run and drove in four, Kylie Folkwein tripled and Bella Baumgart doubled in the win. For Ursuline, Emma Davis was given the loss.
St. John 6, Bristol 4 — The Panthers dropped their second game in the young season as the Fighting Heralds claimed the close contest. Mycie Workman led the Bristol offense with a quartet of singles while Alexa Atchison added a pair of hits as well. Workman was given the loss on the rubber, fanning six.
Maplewood 7, Badger 0 — The Friday contest got off to a slow offensive start but the Rockets’ bats came alive in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead and ride that momentum to best the Braves. Aleesia Woomer led the offensive attack the a double and single, Ava Calvert tripled and drove in two runs while Katie Wear drove in two runs and Hayley Flinner singled twice. Addison Marker picked up the complete-game win behind a 16-strikeout performance in the circle while walking none and allowing five hits. Kyleigh Hall doubled and singled in the loss, while Samantha Bradbury singled twice. Isabella Bailey was given the loss, throwing six innings, striking out three, walking six and allowing nine hits.
Lakeview 10, Hubbard 6 — The Bulldogs plated four runs their first time at the dish, but the Eagles bounced back with five runs of their own. Three more runs in the bottom of the fourth and two in the next inning was the difference maker in the Lakeview win. A number of Lakeview batters tallied a hit, but the bats were charged for Kalyssa Werner who doubled and singled twice, Kennedy Bartlett was a home run shy of the cycle, Mackenzie Stowe homered, tripled, singled and drove in a game-high six runs, Isabella Isenberg blasted a pair of home runs and drove in three, Linnea Kovac singled twice and Ella Collins tripled and singled. Isenberg also picked up the win, striking out seven, walking seven and fanning seven. Haleigh Taylor belted a grand slam for the Eagles and Lauren Komorek singled twice. Kaylee Schultz was given the loss, striking out four while surrendering 12 hits and no walks through 3 1/3 innings.
Howland 15, Crestwood 1 (5 inn.) — The Tigers put 10 runs on the board to start the game and that set the tone in the crushing win over the Red Devils. A smattering of Howland batters tallied a base knock, but the offensive attack was led by Madison Schmitz with a home run, two singles and three RBIs, Mary Moy with a double and single, Brooke Tatar blasted a home run, double, two singles and four RBIs, Brianna Deeter doubled and drove in two runs, Maya Kubancsek homered, singled and drove in three, Brooklyn VanNess doubled and singles, Tabitha Schlatt doubled and Sydney Patrone tripled. Kubancsek was also credited with the win, throwing a perfect three innings while fanning five. Bella Stier was given the loss, striking out two in five innings of work.
