Despite a spring season plagued by inclement weather, the high school softball playoffs are right around the corner. Team seedings were released last week and OHSAA unveiled each of the sectional and district bracket placements throughout the day Sunday.
The Mahoning Valley typically makes a strong showing in the softball playoffs, and this season looks to be no exception with three schools earning No. 1 seeds in their respective districts. Austintown Fitch was tabbed for a top seed in the Austintown district in Division I, South Range earned a No. 1 seed in the Canfield district of Division III and Mathews was chosen for a No. 1 seed in the Kinsman district of Division IV.
The highest rated team opposite the Falcons in their district is No. 7 seed Green, which Fitch could face for the district final, should both teams win out.
South Range has two tough potential opponents on the opposite side of the district bracket in No. 4 seeded Crestview and No. 5 seed Columbiana. Should the high seeds win out, the Rebels would face the Clippers in the district semifinal for a chance at facing the Raiders.
Two high-seeded Trumbull County teams stand in the way of a potential district title for Mathews in No. 7 seed Chalker and No. 3 seed Brookfield. Chalker and Brookfield would have to face one another before a potential matchup with the Mustangs.
In Division II, West Branch earned a No. 2 seed, while No. 3 seeded Poland is also on the Warriors’ side of the bracket in the Jefferson district. Canfield is No. 5 seed in the same district. Hubbard was tabbed for the No. 4 seed, but is instead in the Hubbard district of Division II.
Ursuline with a No. 2 seed and Champion with a No. 3 seed highlight the LaBrae district of the Division III bracket. Finally, in the North Jackson district of Division IV, Bristol earned a No. 2 seed opposite McDonald with a No. 5 seed.
The first day of the playoffs is scheduled for May 7.
