Barry M. Piper 1953-2024
AUSTINTOWN — Barry Michael Piper passed away peacefully, Thursday, Oct. 31, 2024, after a brief battle with cancer. He was 71 years old.
Barry was born March 19, 1953, and raised in Cortland, the son of Edna Mary and the late George Piper.
Barry graduated from Lakeview High School in 1971. Following graduation, he began his career at Packard Electric. Known for his strong work ethic, Barry dedicated over three decades of service at Packard before retiring in 2005. He also was part owner of Tracks Inn in Cortland, with his best friend Ben Bowers, from 1979 to 1985.
He married his wife, Cheryl, on Aug. 14, 1981, and they had 43 beautiful years together.
Upon retirement, Barry embraced a new chapter in his life by venturing into the insurance industry with Greenwood Insurance Agency, where he continued to build meaningful relationships with clients and colleagues alike.
Barry was most known in the community for his passion for golf. A dedicated golfer, he achieved the remarkable feat of three holes-in-one during his career on the course. Whether playing a casual round with friends or competing in local tournaments, Barry’s enthusiasm for the game and his camaraderie with fellow golfers made him a cherished figure in the local golf community.
Survivors include his mother, Edna Mary; his wife, Cheryl; brother, Dennis (Jacque); sister, Sherron; and his children, Jeffrey S. Piper (Molly) of Boardman, Beth A. Mathes (Kevin) of Cortland, Jeffrey T. Piper (Jamie) of Warren and Katie A. Hill (Jeff) of Austintown; along with 11 grandchildren who brought him immense joy.
He was preceded in death by his father, George Piper; brother-in-law, Larry Burt; niece, Melanie Charvat; and in-laws, Earl and Madeline Gisewhite.
Calling hours will be 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, 2024, at Lane Funeral Home, Shafer-Winans Chapel, Cortland. A celebration of Barry’s life will start at 2 p.m. Nov. 9 at the Bronzewood Golf Club House, 9645 Kinsman Pymatuning Road, Kinsman, OH 44428.
In lieu of flowers, Barry requests that suggestions be made to the front office of the Cleveland Browns.
